HAVANA, Cuba - In her first outing since the U.S. World Team Trials last April, Olympian Kelsey Campbell finds herself one win away from gold at the Cerro Pelado International.
Campbell looked strong in her return, pitching two shutout performances at 59 kg/130 lbs. on Monday. She opened with a 7-0 decision over Debora Lawnitzak who is a two-time Junior World Team member for Germany. Her next bout was tighter, but Campbell held solid positioning throughout a 3-0 win over Rachelis Caron of Cuba.
To bring home the gold, Campbell must down another stout opponent from Cuba, Dayselis Rodriguez, who also went 2-0 in the 62 kg round-robin bracket today.
"I thought [Campbell] did really well putting up good pressure and making girls take bad shots. She did a very good job controlling the center more than anything, and she put up a lot of points, which I like," said U.S. coach Angel Cejudo.
The only other American woman competing in Havana was up-and-comer Arian Carpio, who finished in fourth place at last year's U.S. World Team Trials.
It was a rough outing for Carpio at 57 kg/125 lbs. after sustaining a shoulder injury early in her first bout. She suffered technical fall defeats against Cuban duo Maria Fernanda and Lianna Monterro. Carpio medical forfeited from the tournament after her second match.
The conclusion of women's freestyle at the Cerro Pelado International is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. (ET).
