HAVANA, Cuba - The Kamal Bey show struck Cuba yet again, this segment ending with a gold medal dangling from the talented youngster's neck.
The reigning Junior World champion mowed over Cuba's feisty Ariel Fiz during the Granma Cup's 77 kg/170 lbs. Greco-Roman final.
As has been the trend this entire tournament, the previously erratic Bey remained selective offensively and struck with a vengeance when he elected to attack. Several big moves later, and Bey was walking off the mat, hand raised, after a 9-1 victory.
"The main focus was just waiting on my opportunity to strike," Bey reminisced on his finals performance. "Once I got the lead I knew he had to come wrestle me, and that's when a lot of stuff opened up, and I was able to get my last four-point takedown."
It was quite a weekend for Bey, who won four total bouts, two of which were over returning Pan American medalists. He finished with one pin and two technical falls for the tournament.
"My mentality was just to dominate, any shape or form. Once I felt comfortable I would go in there and do what Kamal does best…go out there and get my throws, set up my positions for my scores," he added.
Joining Bey on the medal stand for the Stars and Stripes were experienced international competitor Dalton Roberts and first-time international medalist Kevin Radford.
Roberts, a U23 World Team member last year, made the most of his time in Havana by competing in five matches throughout the tournament. A decisive 6-1 win over Germany's Angrej Ginc on Sunday pushed Roberts' total record to 3-2 and secured the 60 kg/132 lbs. bronze medal.
"I now know what I've got to work on, and these tournaments are about checking where you're at and what you've got to do. I'd say it was a pretty good one," Roberts said.
Radford snatched the 87 kg/191 lbs. bronze medal by way of forfeit from Cuba's Daniel Gregorych. The up-and-comer's only loss came in a hard-fought 5-0 defeat to reigning U23 World champion Erik Szilvassy of Hungary.
Finishing in fifth place after suffering defeats in bronze-medal bouts were Alejandro Sancho at 67 kg/147 lbs., Logan Kass at 72 kg/158 lbs. and Hayden Zillmer at 97 kg/213 lbs.
"I think the overall effort was great," said U.S. Greco-Roman coach Herb House. "It was a learning experience. The biggest thing we learned here is we have a lot of work to do…our key focus is par terre. We have to move and defend in par terre."
The action continues in Cuba with the first day of women's freestyle competition at the Cerro Pelado International. The tournament is expected to begin at 10 a.m. (ET).
