Aaron Cashman wins Junior freestyle gold medal at Flatz Open in Austria

WOLFURT, Austria - Aaron Cashman (Spring Park, Minn./USOTC) was dominant on the way to the gold medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. in the men’s Junior division at the Flatz Open on Saturday.


Cashman, who trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, won four straight matches in his round-robin competition to capture his first international gold medal of his career.


“Aaron had an outstanding tournament. He continues to make great connections, improving in all areas. He outclassed all opponents with superior skill and condition. I am very proud of Aaron’s championship effort,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson.


Cashman opened with a 10-2 win over Richard Racz of Hungary, then powered through his next opponent Nils Leutert of Switzerland in a 10-0 technical fall. Cashman closed out the meet with a pair of quick pins, stopping Willam Ahoune of France), in 39 seconds and Pavol Staron of Slovakia in 17 seconds.


Cashman was eighth in the 2016 Cadet World Championships at 50 kg/110 lbs., after winning the UWW Cadet Nationals that year. In 2017, Cashman was sixth at the UWW Cadet Nationals at 54 kg/119 lbs. He was a 2016 USA Wrestling Cadet Folkstyle Nationals champion.


Also competing at the Flatz Open was a large team of U.S. women, which captured six gold medals and nine total medals on Saturday. A separate story on the women’s performance is posted on TheMat.com.
