DORTMUND, Germany – 2018 Senior World Team member Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./New York AC/NMU-OTS) won an exciting semifinals bout at 60 kg/132 lbs. and qualified for Sunday’s gold-medal finals at the German Grand Prix, a highly respected international Greco-Roman tournament.
Roberts had an impressive come-from-behind 5-3 win over 2007 Military World bronze medalist Maxim Kazharski of Belarus.
Kazaharski led 3-1 after the first period. Roberts got a point on passivity, but Kazharski responded a reversal and a two-point exposure. In the second period, Roberts closed the gap with a point on a passivity. Roberts added a late takedown on a level-change body attack to take a 4-3 lead. The Belarus corner threw in a challenge brick, which was denied, giving Roberts his final point.
Roberts will battle 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Erik Torba of Hungary in the gold-medal match.
In the first session on Saturday, Roberts won his quarterfinal match over Viktor Petryk of Ukraine, 6-0.
“It was an impressive performance by Dalton Roberts. I love the way he competes with a true warrior spirit, and with relentless pressure and attacks. He never stops trying to put points on the board and makes the most of every opportunity,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.
Roberts competed on two U.S. Junior World teams and a U23 World Team, and will wrestling in his first Senior World Championships in October.
Advancing to Sunday’s bronze-medal match at 55 kg/121 lbs. is Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), who dropped a 5-3 semifinal match to Dogus Ayazci of Turkey. Nowry fell behind early, when Dogus was able to turn Nowry from the par terre position. Nowry scored a big takedown in the second period but was unable to close the gap.
Nowry will face Fabian Schmitt of Germany in the bronze-medal round on Sunday. Nowry beat Schmitt during Pool A competition earlier today by a 5-1 score.
Three U.S. wrestlers who lost a bout on Saturday morning have been pulled back into Sunday morning’s repechage, when the athlete who beat them advanced to the gold-medal finals.
When Torba won his 60 kg semifinal to advance to the finals against Roberts, he also pulled 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Taylor LaMont (Mapleton, Utah/Sunkist Kids) back into Sunday’s repechage. Torba had beaten LaMont in the quarterfinals, 7-1. LaMont has drawn Dawid Ersetic of Poland in repechage.
At 82 kg, 2014 World champion and three-time Olympian Peter Bacsi of Hungary won his semifinal match, which pulled 2018 U.S. Senior World Team member Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) back into repechage. Bacsi beat Speiller in the quarterfinals, 4-1. Speiller battles Roland Schwarz of Germany in repechage.
Three-time U.S. Senior World Team member Patrick Martinez was pulled into repechage at 87 kg/191.5 lbs. when Amer Hrustanovic of Austria reached the finals. Martinez lost to Hrustanovic in the first round, 5-1. Martinez will battle Aleksandar Stjepanetic of Sweden in his repechage bout.
Going into the semifinals, Jesse Thielke (Beresford, S.D (New York AC/Legends of Gold) had a chance to get into repechage at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. However, when 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Stig Andre Berge of Norway lost in the semifinals, Thielke was eliminated. Berge edged Thielke, 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
Team USA entered the German Grand Prix with 11 wrestlers, and five are still alive going into Sunday’s action. USA Wrestling is using this event as a tune-up for the 2018 World Championships in Hungary in October, as seven 2018 World Team members entered.
