LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The women’s freestyle finals of the Marine Corps U.S. Open had a mix of veteran champions and young new talents at the South Point Arena on Friday night.
One of the most anticipated finals, 2016 World Team member Sarah Hildebrandt of the New York AC defeated 2016 Olympian and 2017 World Team member Haley Augello of the New York AC, 6-1. Hildebrandt scored two takedowns in the first period and another in the second period to win her first U.S. Open title. Hildebrandt was named Outstanding Wrestler in the women’s division.
“In my mind it wasn’t the best match, but I got the job done and that’s what I wanted to do. I’ve been in this U.S. Open final a ton and I’ve never been able to finish, in fact, finishing in tournaments is something I struggle with. Just this year, I’ve started to collecting first place wins and finishing tournaments. Today really just proved that mile marker that I’ve gone beyond.” Hildebrandt
Kayla Miracle of the Sunkist Kids won her second straight U.S. Open title, defeating 2017 World Team member Mallory Velte of the Titan Mercury WC, 3-0 in another showcase final. Miracle, who has won Cadet and Junior World medals for the USA, scored her first point when Velte was hit with a shot clock violation, and added a takedown for her other two points. Miracle finished her college career at Campbellsville this year as a four-time WCWA champion.
“I feel great, a little tired. Mallory is a tank, she brought everything and more. She’s a great competitor and I’m sure I’ll see her at Final X,” said Miracle.
With these young stars, a number of other experienced talents put on a great show in the finals.
Three-time World champion Adeline Gray of the New York AC won her fourth U.S. Open title, with a dominant 10-0 technical fall victory over young Leilani Camrgo-Noane of the MWC Wrestling Academy at 76 kg. Gray scored a takedown and added four straight turns to close out the match. Gray missed the 2017 season to recover from injury and has come back strong since returning to competition in the fall.
“It was very hard to come back. Then my first couple tournaments I wrestled back-to-back, and there were some hard weight cuts and I got sick so it really wasn’t the best kind of bringing me back in and ease me into wrestling. Still had some great tournaments and awesome matches with international competition so I’m looking forward to keeping that ball rolling for another month,” said Gray.
In a close battle, 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell of the Sunkist Kids defeated Lauren Louive of the New York AC, 4-2 at 59 kg. Campbell scored the only takedown and controlled the action on the way to her fourth career U.S. Open title.
At 50 kg, three-time World Team member Whitney Conder of the U.S. Army was the most dominant on her feet, defeating two-time World Team member Victoria Anthony of the Sunkist Kids, 7-3. Conder competed most of her career at 53 kg and came down to this new weight class. It was Conder’s fifth U.S. Open title.
One of the other veteran champions was Erin Clodgo of the Sunkist Kids, the 72 kg champion, who won her fourth U.S. Open title and second in a row. Clodgo defeated Rachel Watters of the New York AC, 6-5. The bout was tied at 4-4 at the break, and a second-period takedown for Clodgo proved to be the difference.
2017 World Team member Tamyra Mensah of the Titan Mercury WC defeated Randyl Beltz of the New York AC by technical fall, 10-0 at 68 kg. In the first period, Mensah got Beltz to her back in the opening seconds, and held her there for almost three minutes, leading 2-0 at the break. In the second, Mensah opened up her offense with takedowns and a turn and secured the technical fall, giving her a second career U.S. Open title.
Joining Hildebrandt as first-time U.S. Open winners were Jacarra Winchester of the Titan Mercury WC at 55 kg, Alex Hedrick of the Titan Mercury WC at 57 kg and Julia Salata of the New York AC at 65 kg.
Winchester scored two first-period takedowns and went on to beat Dominique Parrish of the Sunkist Kids, 5-3. Parrish had a deep shot on Winchester in the closing seconds, but Winchester’s defense held it off as time ran out.
It was a youth movement at 57 kg, as Hedrick, a Simon Fraser University freshman pinned high school senior Michaela Beck of the New York AC in 2:41. Hedrick scored three straight first period takedowns then ran a bar arm to turn and pin Beck. Hedrick, who was second in the 2018 WCWA women’s college nationals, won her first U.S. Open title.
Salata, who was a U.S. Open runner-up in 2017 and was third on two occasions, broke through with a 5-0 shutout of Forrest Molinari of the Titan Mercury WC in the finals. Salata scored a takedown and a two-point counter exposure and shut down Molinari’s offense.
Seven of the champions were able to advance to Final X, the exciting new three-event series in June which will determine the 2018 U.S. World Team. Advancing to Final X were Conder, Hildebrandt, Miracle, Salata, Stock, Clodgo and Gray.
Because there was a 2017 World medalist in their weight class who has already qualified for Final X, three of the U.S. champions advanced to the finals series of the Freestyle World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Rochester, Minn. in May: Winchester, Hedrick and Campbell.
The Titan Mercury WC won the Div. I team title with 91 points, with the New York AC in second with 84 points.
