Five past World medalists fall in UWW Junior freestyle quarters at US Open

LAS VEGAS – Four past age-group World medalists advanced to the UWW Junior freestyle semifinals, while five other past World medalists fell short in the quarterfinal round in the first day of action at the 2018 Marine Corps U.S. Open at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas.

World medalists heading to the semifinals are 2016 Cadet World silver medalist Vitali Arujau at 61 kg, 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist David Carr at 70 kg, 2017 Cadet World champion Aaron Brooks at 79 kg and 2017 Cadet World champion Daniel Kerkvliet at 97 kg.

Arujau was the 2017 UWW Junior runner-up at 60 kg and Carr finished 6th at 70 kg. Brooks and Kerkvliet did not compete in last year’s competition.

Five World medalists were topped in the quarterfinals and three of them were teched.

Falling in the 57 kg quarters was 2017 Junior Greco World silver medalist Cevion Severado, who dropped a 16-4 bout to 2017 Junior freestyle World Team member Malik Heinselman.

At 70 kg, 2015 Cadet World champion Jarod Verkleeren fell to Jaden Van Maanen, 12-2, while Hoffman suffered a 10-0 loss to Kordell Norfleet at 86 kg.

Losing decisions in the quarters were 2017 Cadet bronze medalist Jacori Teemer at 70 kg, who lost a 6-2 bout to Austin O’Connor, and 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist Travis Wittlake at 79 kg, who was defeated by Matt Finesilver, 6-3.
