LAS VEGAS – 10 wrestlers won UWW Junior Greco championships at the U.S. Open on Thursday at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas.
With the win, those 10 wrestlers secured an automatic berth to the finals of the Junior Greco World Team Trials, which are set for June 8 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Highlighting the finals field were 2017 Cadet World Champion Cohlton Schultz (New York AC) at 130 kg and 2017 Junior World silver medalist Cevion Severado (New York AC) at 55 kg.
Schultz looked unmatched the entire tournament, not giving up a single point and winning all four bouts by technical fall. In the finals, he defeated Olympic Training Center resident athlete Nick Boykin (Sunkist Kids) with a 10-0 tech fall.
“I was able to win a lot of the pummeling in all of my matches and put some points on the board,” Schultz said. “I’ve been working a lot on my positioning on my feet. I’ve been getting bigger and stronger, so it’s all coming together.”
Severado picked up a win by injury default over Joseph Harrison (MWC). Severado led 8-1 at the time of the injury default.
Another World representative winning a title was 2017 Cadet World Team member Malik Johnson of Missouri, who picked up a tight 11-9 decision over Benji Peak, who wrestles at the Northern Michigan Olympic Training Site.
Winning the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler honor was Peyton Omania (CYC), who won the 67 kg bracket. Omania teched his way to the finals and met up with 2017 Junior World Team member Dom Demas (OKRTC) in the finals. The bout went back and forth and was full of entertaining throws and exchanges. Omania came out on top with an 18-10 tech fall.
The California native split his day wrestling in both the Junior and Senior brackets. In the Senior bracket, he advanced to the quarterfinal, where he fell to Olympian Ellis Coleman. He will compete in the wrestlebacks tonight.
“It’s been pretty tiring (wrestling in both touraments),” Omania said. “The weight cut wasn’t the best, but I like wrestling people like Ellis Coleman. To get better, you’ve got to wrestle the best.”
Four other Junior Greco wrestlers won their finals by tech fall, including Alston Nutter (NMU-OTS) at 63 kg, Tyler Dow (BRTC) at 72 kg, Anthony Mantanona (OKRTC) at 77 kg and Austin Harris (Cowboy WC/Titan Mercury WC) at 97 kg.
The remaining championships came from Andrew Berreyesa (New York AC) at 82 kg and Austin Harris (Cowboy WC/Titan Mercury) at 97 kg.
The UWW Junior men’s freestyle tournament will take place on Friday at the South Point Arena. All the action will be broadcast live on Flowrestling.org.
