High school girls wrap up Western Regional freestyle and Greco action

LAS VEGAS – The Junior girls Western Regional saw gifted wrestlers compete for titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman on Wednesday at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev.

The 132-pound finals featured two returning champions, Caden Campbell of Colorado, who won at 127 pounds in 2017, and Alexandria Liles of Texas, who won at 138 pounds in 2017. Ranked No. 2 in the country, Liles shook up the latest National Girls High School rankings, knocking off Campbell, the top-ranked 132-pound wrestler in the nation.

Liles started off with back-to-back four pointers and continued rolling for a 13-6 win.

The 152-pound weight class in freestyle was loaded with talent as five of the seven entrants are ranked nationally. To further showcase the level of talent at the weight, all four quarterfinalists are past Fargo champions, including Jerzie Estrada of Colorado, Macey Kilty of Wisconsin, Kelani Corbett of Hawai’i and Alexis Gomez of Illinois.

Emerging to the finals were Kilty, ranked No. 2 at 144 pounds, and Estrada, ranked No. 5 at 152 pounds. Kilty, a 2016 Cadet World Team member, rolled to a quick 10-0 tech fall over Estrada, who won the event last year.

In addition to her second-place finish in freestyle, Estrada won the Greco-Roman title earlier in the day.

Putting together a successful day was Phoenix Dubose of Washington, who walked away with championships in both freestyle and Greco. In freestyle at 122 pounds, Dubose notched two falls and a 7-2 decision to claim the crown, taking the mat just moments after winning the Greco title with two falls and a technical fall.
