It was a very busy weekend for 108 young U.S. wrestlers, who were in Europe to train and compete on four different tours organized by a variety of wrestling clubs and leaders. Greco-Roman was included in all of these tours, and many of those who were there also competed and trained in freestyle.
It is the largest group of U.S. age-group Greco-Roman athletes to compete and train in Europe on the same weekend in recent memory, an indication that the USA is making big progress in its youth Greco-Roman and international style programs.
A group of 48 youth wrestlers, competing in Greco-Roman and freestyle, competed in the Tallinn Open in Tallin, Estonia, on a tour organized by Jared Lewis. There was a major international training camp on the days following the tournament there.
Another large group of 41 age-group athletes, on a tour organized by Terry Pack and the Legends of Gold Training Center in South Dakota, wrestled at the Easter Tournament in Utrecht, Holland. Athletes competed in Greco-Roman, men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle.
A team of eight young wrestlers from the Ivan Delchev Trained Academy in Idaho, competed in both styles at the Dinko Petrov Tournament in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria.
Over in Malmo, Sweden, a delegation of 11 wrestlers from the Finger Lakes WC of New York, led by FLWC Greco-Roman coach Ahad Javanselehi, participated in an international training camp with a focus on Greco-Roman.
The United States won numerous medals in each of the three competitions, and won the overall team title at both the Tallinn Open and the Easter Tournament.
“Thank you to the 108 student-athletes who are getting a tremendous European wrestling experience because of the efforts of their dedicated tour organizers, coaches, Greco supporters, and parents that have made a focused commitment toward advancing Greco-Roman wrestling in our Country,” said USA Wrestling Manager of Greco-Roman Programs Gary Mayabb.
There will be a separate story posted on TheMat.com with results from each of the competitions.
“It has been a true joy to work with this group of talented young athletes from across our nation and we are very excited to track their future growth as they advance the wrestling careers they are creating,” said Mayabb.
These tours are part of an overall plan within the USA Greco-Roman program to get more young athletes entered into international tournaments as a part of developing a base of experienced wrestlers coming through the developmental program.
“This is how we beat the rest of the world in Greco. We get our athletes competing overseas. We have kids that dream of winning state titles and we need young men dreaming of Olympic glory,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.
