Kosoy wins silver, Gantt earns bronze at Miner's Fame International in Russia

KEMEROVO, Russia – The Miner’s Glory International concluded its men’s freestyle tournament with American competitors Thomas Gantt (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) and Michael Kosoy (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) putting together medal-winning efforts.
Gantt, a U.S. World Team Trials qualifier and past NCAA All-American for North Carolina State, posted a 4-1 record on his way to bronze at 70 kg/154 lbs. He opened with top-notch wins over Yasar Dogu bronze medalist Artem Umarov of Russia, 10-0, and Junior European champion Anzor Zakuev of Russia, 17-5.
In the quarterfinals, Gantt was defeated 7-2 by Ivan Yarygin bronze medalist Alibek Akbaev of Russia. Akbaev made the finals, pulling Gantt into the repechage, where he topped Mongolia’s Chinzorig Tsermaa, 9-6, and Russia’s Semyon Tereshenko, 2-2, to secure the bronze medal.
Kosoy, a recent Maccabiah Games champion and past NCAA Qualifier for North Carolina State, looked solid in a silver-medal outing at 125 kg/275 lbs. Kosoy picked up three wins to earn a spot in the championship bout. His signature win came by pin over Russian Nationals bronze medalist Tsibik Maksarov in the semifinals. He fell 2-1 in his final match of the day to President Cup of Buryatia Republic bronze medalist Ostap Pasenok of Russia.
On the first day of competition, U.S. participant Timmy McCall (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) earned a fifth-place finish at 97 kg/213 lbs.
Prize money was awarded to each medalist at the Miner’s Glory International. 100,000 rubles were awarded to champions, 60,000 rubles were given to silver medalists, and 30,000 rubles were earned by bronze medalists.
