KEMEROVO, Russia – American Timmy McCall (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) finished in fifth place at 97 kg/213 lbs. to conclude the first day of men’s freestyle competition at the Miner’s Glory International.
McCall won his first two bouts of the day over Aleksander Wojtachnio of Poland, 10-0, and Erik Thiele of Germany, 4-0, to qualify for the semifinals. Wojtachnio previously finished in fifth place at the University World Championships. Thiele was a step up in class, having a Junior World silver medal and European bronze medal to his credit.
In his semifinal, McCall was pinned by highly-touted Russian Yuri Belonovski in the first period. Belonovski has won five international medals in 2017 and finished in third at the Russian Nationals. The loss dropped McCall into the bronze medal match where he was pinned by Huber Shimon of Poland. McCall was leading by four points at the time of the fall.

U.S. World Team Trials qualifier Thomas Gantt (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) and Maccabiah Games champion Mike Kosoy (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC/Wolfpack RTC) take the mat tomorrow.
