The U.S. delegation will be 39-athletes strong for the 2017 Veterans World Championships, set for Plovdiv, Bulgaria, October 10-15.
The Veterans World Championships features athletes between 35-60 years old, and will include both freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions. A majority of the U.S. athletes on the tour are expected to compete in both styles.
Among those competing is the only two-time Veterans World Greco-Roman champion for the United States, Chris Brown of Boyds, Md., who will compete in both styles at 78 kg in Div. E. This will be the final year that Brown is eligible to compete, based upon new age limits. Brown has been team captain for the U.S. Veterans team in past years.
Five athletes who won Veterans World freestyle titles in 2016 are registered to compete again. They include Octavius Bellamy of Bolingbrook, Ill. (Div. B 100 kg), Petros Petrosyan of Los Alamitos, Calif. (Div. D 88 kg), George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Div. D 130 kg) Bruce Moe of Hillsboro, N.D. (Div. E 78 kg) and John Hanrahan of Milton, Ga. (Div. E 88 kg).
Jason Goldman of Endicott, N.Y., a 2013 and 2014 Veterans World freestyle champion, will compete at 62 kg in Div. B.
The U.S. delegation will include eight freestyle national champions and nine Greco-Roman national champions from the 2017 Masters National Championships in Las Vegas in April
2017 Masters freestyle national champions competing in Plovdiv include Jason Goldman of New York, Rudy James of Minnesota, Jeff Estrada of Colorado, James Medeiros of California, Joe Raia of Illinois, Kevin Pine of Nevada, Jeff Anderson of Michigan and George Porter of Florida.
2017 Masters Greco-Roman national champions on the delegation to Bulgaria include Goldman, Medeiros, Raia, Pine, Porter plus Norman Manning of South Carolina, Gelu Bors of Nevada, Hedj Nelson of Washington and Brian Jones of California.
Greco-Roman will be held the first three days (Oct. 10-12) with freestyle on the last three days (Oct. 13-15).
The United States is traditionally one of the largest and most successful delgations at the annual Veterans World Championships. In 2016, the USA earned 19 medals at the Veterans Worlds held in Poland, including nine gold medals.
Athletes who place in the top four of their weight classes will earn points towards USA Wrestling’s Masters Ironman standings.
