Morrow, Johnson win golds as NMU-OTS claims five medals at Eduardo Campbell Cup in Panama

PANAMA CITY, Panama – A pair of upperclassmen, junior Austin Morrow (Wenatchee, Wash.) and senior Khymba Johnson (Sacramento, Calif.,) won gold medals, leading the Northern Michigan University – Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman team to five medals at the Eduardo Campbell Cup on Saturday.
Morrow claimed the title at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., winning six straight matches, all in dominant fashion. Included were five technical falls and a pin. Morrow claimed a second Eduardo Campbell Cup gold medal to go with his 2015 title.
At 85 kg/187 lbs., Johnson had four wins in a row, including two technical falls. He defeated 2008 Pan American Championships bronze medalist Elton Brown of Panama, 4-0, in his final match.
Claiming a silver medal at 75 kg/165 lbs. was senior Corey Fitzgerald (Green, Ohio), who went 2-1, with a pair of technical falls.
Bronze medals were claimed by freshman Chris Rodgers (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and freshman George Sikes (Fort Pierce, Fla.) at 85 kg/187 lbs. The NMU-OTS delegation included seven athletes.
“The Panama tour works great for our program. It’s the first tournament that we participate in each year. And the wrestlers get a lot of matches, it shows them where they are and where they need to get to for the rest of the year.” said NMU-OTS head coach Rob Hermann.
Next up for NMU-OTS is the U23 World Team Trials in Rochester, Minn., Oct. 6-8.
