COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The final session of the 20th anniversary Dave Schultz Memorial International saw six Americans strike gold, with 74 kg/163 lbs. champion Nazar Kulchytskyy earning the Outstanding Wrestler honor.
Kulchytskyy edged formidable Russian Rasul Dzukaev in the championship bout, 5-3. Dzukaev finished in third place at the Russian Nationals this year and is a past winner of the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix.
“I knew he was going to be a tough opponent,” Kulchytskyy said. “I feel like I wrestled a smart match. I may not have put a lot of points on the board, but I thought it was important to wrestle a smart match and close it down. I had some good defense in the end and pulled out the W, so I’m pretty happy with how I wrestled.”
Completing a sensational run to the 61 kg/134 lbs. title, 2015 U.S. World Team Trials runner-up Joe Colon downed 2017 U.S. Open runner-up Nahshon Garrett by technical fall, 14-3. Colon also scored revenge on two-time U.S. World Team member Tony Ramos in the semifinals.
“I felt great. I felt really confident going out there. My game plan was to wrestle hard for six minutes and to keep moving my feet, keep circling and keep moving my hands. I know his blast double was working really well for him this weekend, so I had to keep my hands down and not reach up to the head. I had to stay active, get to my shots and make him feel uncomfortable,” Colon said.
After a one-year layoff, Jon Reader returned with a vengeance, picking up three technical falls on his way to the 79 kg/174 lbs. title. He defeated past NCAA champion Matt Brown 10-0 in the championship bout.
U.S. National Team members Nick Heflin and Dom Bradley posted dominant finals performances. Heflin picked up a fall in 1:35 on Timmy McCall at 92 kg/202 lbs., while Bradley won cruised 11-0 over Jon Gingrich at 125 kg/275.5 lbs.
The final American to take home a title was perennial contender Kellen Russell at 70 kg/154 lbs. Russell made quick work of fellow U.S. competitor Mario Mason, winning by a 12-2 tally.
International champions on the day include Samat Nadyrbek-Uulu of Kyrgyzstan at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., Seung-Chul Lee of Korea at 65 kg/143 lbs., Aleksandr Musalaliev of Russia at 86 kg/189 lbs. and Min Won Son of Korea at 97 kg/213 lbs.
