2016 Junior World bronze medalist Taylor LaMont of Mapleton, Utah won a gold medal in Greco-Roman in the UWW Junior division of the City of Sassari International Tournament in Italy on Friday. The tournament is held in memory of Italian wrestling leader Matteo Pellicone.
Competing at 60 kg, LaMont defeated Giuseppe Liarto of Italy in the gold-medal finals with a 10-1 technical fall. LaMont led 2-0 at the break, scoring a takedown in the first period on a hip toss. He opened up his offense in the second period, adding another attack in which he was reversed to lead 4-1. He closed out the match with a go-behind for a takedown, then added two gut wrenches for six quick points to secure the technical fall.
LaMont is a freshman at Utah Valley University. He was sixth at the 2017 Senior World Team Trials at 59 kg in Las Vegas in April.
Additional information on this competition will be posted when received. Three wrestlers from Utah Valley University are on the tour, with Grant LaMont and Matt Findlay also competing this weekend.
