Schoolgirl Pan American team determined at Women’s Nationals in Irving, Texas

The finals of the Schoolgirl tournament were held alongside the finals of the UWW Cadet Women’s World Team Trials.

Two wrestlers repeated at Schoolgirl national champions, Sage Mortimer, who won the 97-pound bracket, and Kylie Welker, who took the crown at 105 pounds.

Mortimer opened her day with a 12-0 technical fall, before pinning her quarterfinals opponent, Cayden Condit in 2:41. Mortimer sealed her spot in the finals, defeating Amani Jones, 14-4, notching her second tech fall of the day. In the finals, she met up with Cristelle Rodriguez, who she outlasted, 10-5, to win her second national title.

Welker bookended her tournament with 10-0 tech falls. She defeated Ally Fitzgerald in the finals in dominant fashion. On the day, Welker outscored her opponents, 39-5. The only points she gave up came against Korina Blades in the quarterfinals.

Winning Division II last year and coming out on top in Schoolgirl this year were Alexandra Szkotnicki (81 pounds) and Kyleigh Dean (155 pounds).

Nine other girls earned spots on the U.S. team for Schoolgirl Pan Ams, which is scheduled for August 17-19 in Santiago, Chile.

The kids divisions saw only two repeating champions from 2016.  

In Division I, Taina Fernandez (SMWC Wolfpack) tallied a pair to 10-0 technical falls at 70 pounds to win her second-straight national championship.

June Welch (Virginia Women`s National Team) won the 60-pound bracket in Division II, outscoring her opponents 30-0 on the day. It was Welch’s second national title.

Each division wrestled today has grown immensely since last year’s tournament. Divison I and Schoolgirl more than doubled in entrants with Div. I going from 13 to 36 and Schoolgirl going from 44 to 91. Divison II grew from 42 competitors last year to 63 today.
