SALVADOR DA BAHIA, Brazil - The first day of the 2017 Pan American Senior Wrestling Championships, which started Friday morning with the Greco-Roman competition, was postponed after a fire started in the venue, the Pan American Judo Center.

Competition was held for about one hour on two mats inside the Pan American Judo Center, when the arena filled with smoke. A fire was ignited in a sauna which was located in the venue. All of those involved with competition, including athletes, coaches, officials, tournament staff and fans were safely evacuated from the arena and returned to their hotel.

The Greco-Roman competition was postponed on Friday, and will resume on Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m. local time in Brazil and run through completion. The women’s freestyle competition, which was supposed to begin on Saturday morning, will now begin at 2:00 p.m. and will also be completed on Saturday.

The tournament will return to the venue, the Pan American Judo Center, for the rest of the competition. It will be streamed live on Trackwrestling.com.

Men’s freestyle, originally scheduled for Sunday, will be held as planned.

In the first hour of competition, the United States had two matches, both ending with losses.

At 130 kg/286 lbs., 2016 Olympian Robby Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) was defeated by 2016 Pan American champion Oscar Pino Hinds, 4-2. Hinds scored a four-point move in the first period, and Smith was able to get a second-period takedown but could not close the gap.

At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Gorge Batis of Honduras defeated Hayden Tuma (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) by an 8-0 margin. Tuma, a 2017 U.S. Open champion, is competing up one weight class from his normal 59 kg/130 lbs.

The first round of matches was not completely finished when competition was halted, but some matches were held in each of the eight weight classes. The Greco-Roman tournament will start at the point where it was stopped when action begins on Saturday.
