SZOMBATHELY, Hungary – The first day of Greco-Roman competition at the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix came to a close on Saturday with the U.S. falling short of a medal.

U.S. competitors Raymond Bunker (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marines), Rodolfo Guillen (Duluth, Ga./Unattached) and Malcolm Allen (Mankato, Minn./Minnesota Storm) all dropped their opening match on Saturday to international foes and were not pulled into repechage rounds.

Bunker, a sixth-place finisher at the 2017 U.S. Senior Nationals, dropped a close 2-0 decision to eventual bronze medalist Shogo Takahashi of Japan in the first round at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.

Also wrestling at 66 kg, Greco-Roman newcomer Guillen fell to past Hungarian World Team member Matthew Krasznai, 7-2.

Dave Schultz Memorial International champion Allen was upended by Laszlo Balogh of Hungary, 5-1, in the first round at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Action from the Hungarian Grand Prix will continue tomorrow with five U.S. wrestlers taking the mat led by 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion Joe Rau (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 98 kg/215.5 lbs.

Rau will face a stiff test early after drawing 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and 2013 World bronze medalist Javid Hamzatau of Belarus in the opening round.

Also competing at 98 kg for the U.S. is Paris International bronze medalist Daniel Miller (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marines). Miller opens against former Junior World Team member for Hungary, Fodor Tamas.

Americans Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets), Barrett Stanghill (Philipsburg, Mont./Minnesota Storm) and John Stefanowicz (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marines) are entered at 80 kg/176 lbs.

2016 Olympic Team Trials runner-up Speiller will take on 2014 University World silver medalist Aleksander Kukhta of Ukraine to begin his day.

Stanghill, a third-place finisher at the 2017 U.S. Senior Nationals, is slated to face 2016 Wladyslaw Pytlasinski Cup silver medalist Pavel Pamichuk of Belarus in the first round.

A fifth-place finisher at the U.S. Senior Nationals, Stefanowicz will open against 2014 World champion and three-time Olympian Peter Bacsi of Hungary.
