Defending champion Emmanuel leads NCWA Nationals with four finalists, with Liberty in second

ALLEN, Texas – Defending champion Emmanuel College, led by four individual finalists, lead the NCWA Nationals after the second day, ahead of second place Liberty by 56.5 points.


Emmanuel is led by three returning champions, all who were seeded No. 1 and reached the finals again, Darius Bunch at 133 pounds, Cody Chaney at 184 pounds and Maveric Rechsteiner at 197 pounds. Emmanuel’s other finalist, top seeded Jeremiah Lutz at 149, was third in last year’s NCWA Nationals at 157.


Liberty, which placed second last year, has just one finalist, No. 1 seed Josh Ferenczy at 174 pounds, but still has six other wrestlers in the consolation rounds. Liberty is in second with 137 points, followed by Central Florida with 127 points, Grand Valley State with 110.5 points and Air Force Prep with 85 points.


Frenenczy is one of four 2016 NCWA runners-up who have reached the finals again, along with No. 3 seed Timothy Sakow of Central Florida at 125 pounds, No. 4 seed Stevan Webb of UConn at 235 pounds and No. 4 seed Jesse Gaudin of Central Florida at 285 pounds.


Air Force Prep and Central Florida has three finalists, while no other school has more than one.


In the women’s division, returning team champion Southwest Oregon CC is in first place with six finalists and last year’s runner-up Ottawa in in second with four finalists


Four 2016 NCWA women’s champions have reached the finals again, Samantha Frank of Maine at 101, Marina Goocher of Michigan-Dearborn at 136, Carly Jaramillo of Southwestern Oregon at 143 and Tatum Sparks of Southwestern Oregon at 155.
