NYKOBING FALSTER, Denmark – Three U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers won a medal at the 2017 Thor Masters Tournament held in Denmark on Saturday.

Bringing home gold for the U.S. were a pair of past Olympians, Ildar Hafizov (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Robby Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Hafizov, a 2008 Olympian for Uzbekistan and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up, ran through the 59 kg bracket, picking up five wins on his way to gold. In the championship bout, Hafizov pinned 2013 World Military bronze medalist and 2012 World University silver medalist Michal Tracz of Poland.

Competing for the first time since the Rio Olympics, Smith went 4-1 in a six-man round robin at 130 kg to take top prize. Smith lost a tight one in his opener to Paris International silver medalist Oskar Marvik of Norway, 3-2. He then won four-straight bouts, including a fall over eventual silver medalist Christian John of Germany, on his way to gold.

The U.S. picked up a bronze medal from 2017 U.S. Open champion Patrick Smith (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 71 kg/156 lbs.

Smith opened with a 2-1 loss at the hand of Germany’s Timo Badusch before reeling off three straight victories to claim the bronze. In the medal match, Smith edged fellow American Alex Sancho (Miami, Fla./New York AC) on criteria, 6-6.

“The Greco athletes fought hard and competed well against a very tough field. I was excited to see our athletes compete. We are making huge progress with a talented group of future stars,” said U.S. Greco-Roman coach Matt Lindland.

The remaining U.S. entrants posted a mixed bag of results throughout the day of wrestling in Denmark.

Olympians Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) and Ben Provisor (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) both won matches but found themselves on the outside looking in of a medal. Coleman went 4-0 at 66 kg/145 lbs. before injury defaulting out of the tournament, while Provisor finished with a 1-1 record at 85 kg/187 lbs.

U.S. Olympic Trials champion RaVaughn Perkins (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) picked up two wins to start the day at 71 kg before dropping back-to-back bouts to finish without a medal. Of note, Perkins was defeated in the third round by U.S. Open runner-up Alex Sancho by a 5-3 score.

2015 World Team member Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) went a perfect 2-0 on the day, but due to vertical paring methods he was not afforded an opportunity to wrestle for a medal.

2017 U.S. Open champions Hayden Tuma (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), Cheney Haight (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), Kevin Radford (Fayetteville, N.C./Sunkist Kids) and Toby Erickson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) were knocked from medal contention relatively early in the competition.

Also competing for the U.S. on Saturday but unable to win a medal were Sammy Jones (Folsom, La./New York AC), Nick Tarpley (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Minnesota Storm).
