Sammie Henson and Coleman Scott named men's freestyle World Team coaches

Sammie Henson of Morgantown, W.V., and Coleman Scott of Chapel Hill, N.C., have been named the volunteer men’s freestyle coaches for the U.S. World Team that will compete at the World Championships held in Paris, France.
Henson and Scott will work alongside U.S. National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick, and U.S. Assistant National Freestyle Coaches Kevin Jackson and Joe Russell, to prepare the team to compete at the World Championships, as well as coach team members throughout the duration of the event.
Henson is the current head coach at West Virginia University, a post he has manned since 2014. During his time coaching the college ranks, he has guided countless wrestlers to All-American finishes, five of whom were crowned NCAA champions. Henson has also been instrumental in helping Senior-level athletes succeed on the international circuit. Most recently, he coached top-talents like Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun and U.S. World Team member Nick Marable.
“I’m fortunate enough to be a part of this, and I think it’s a great team that we have assembled,” Henson said. “I always wanted be one of the coaches on the elite level, and this is a great opportunity. I appreciate Bill Zadick giving me that chance.”
As a competitor, Henson was a three-time Olympic and World medalist in freestyle. He took gold at the 1998 World Championships held in Tehran, Iran. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Henson earned a silver medal. His final World medal came in 2006 as he went on to score bronze in Guangzhou, China. He was a two-time NCAA champion for Clemson University.
Scott is entering his third season as the head coach at the University of North Carolina. He brought a jolt of energy to the Tar Heel program with his first All-American coming in 2015. Scott has started to build a solid foundation for the Tar Heel Wrestling Club alongside his star pupil, two-time U.S. World Team member Tony Ramos.
“It’s a great opportunity for myself, for my school, and being associated with the best wrestlers and the best coaches, and being able to learn from them every day…the way they run practice, pick their brains, and see the best wrestlers, as well as coaches. It’s just very fortunate be here and be in this situation,” Scott said.
The crowning achievement of his athletic career came at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, where he won a bronze medal. He was a four-time NCAA All-American for Oklahoma State and a NCAA champion in 2008.
The men’s freestyle competition will be contested at AccorHotels Arena, Aug. 25-26. Thomas Gilman, Logan Stieber, J’den Cox and Nick Gwiazdowski will compete on day one. Zain Retherford, James Green, Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Snyder will close out the show.
