FARGO, N.D. – The championship finals have been set in the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Greco-Roman Nationals after a spirited semifinal round on Friday evening at the FargoDome.
A heavyweight showdown between returning Junior National Greco-Roman champion Brandon Metz of North Dakota and Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois, who is seeking the Junior Triple Crown, will anchor a gold-medal finals expected to be very exciting.
Cassioppi won both the Junior Folkstyle Nationals in Iowa in April, as well as the Junior Freestyle Nationals here in Fargo on Tuesday. He is attempting to become only the eighth wrestler to win a Junior Triple Crown and the first since 2014. Cassioppi beat Metz in the freestyle finals, 4-1.
Metz had a difficult semifinal, getting behind early to Kendrick Watson of North Carolina, before winning 7-6. Cassioppi had a big semifinal win, stopping 2016 Cadet Nationals runner-up Montana Phillips of Oklahoma, 10-0.
Metz is a graduated senior from West Fargo who will compete in college here in North Dakota State. He is looking to finish off his high school career with a second Junior Nationals Greco-Roman title won in his home city. He also gets an opportunity for another shot at Cassioppi after the freestyle finals loss.
The two other 2016 Junior National Greco-Roman champions in the semifinals advanced to the finals, Brendan Garcia of Colorado (106) and Haydn Maley of Oregon (220).
Garcia will face 2017 Junior Nationals freestyle champion and 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion Samuel Latona of Alabama in the finals.
Maley will face Darrell Mason of Illinois for the title. Maley pinned Garcia Aric Bohn of Wisconsin in 1:17 to earn his return trip to the finals.
There were some very competitive bouts which would not seem so, based upon the final scores, which ended up as technical falls
At 120 pounds, 2016 Junior Nationals freestyle runner-up Rayvon Foley of Michigan battled 2017 Junior Nationals champion Patrick McKee of Pennsylvania in a semifinal battle. It was an active match with both athletes scoring, until Foley opened it up in the second period to secure a 16-6 technical fall. Foley will face Brody Kuntz of Wisconsin in the finals.
At 145 pounds, 2016 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team member Peyton Omania of California had a wide-open match with 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman runner-up Brock Hardy of Utah. Both wrestlers had big moves in a close battle, until Omania got some big moves to secure a 20-10 technical fall.
Among the other finalists are 2016 Junior National Greco-Roman runners-up Austin Macias of Illinois (126) and Dalton Young of Washington (132).
Four 2017 Junior National freestyle champions will compete in the finals, Cassioppi and Latona, plus Anthony Artalona of Florida (152) and Jacob Warner of Illinois (195).
Illinois will defend its Junior Greco-Roman team title, after pushing eight wrestlers into the finals. Wisconsin has four finalist and Washington has three.
The schedule for Junior National Greco-Roman finals has been changed to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. In addition, the conclusion of the Women’s National Duals will be held. Check all the action on Flowrestling.
