FARGO, N.D. – The Cadet women’s freestyle portion of the U.S. Marine Corps Junior and Cadet Nationals wrapped up on Tuesday afternoon, with Emily Shilson of Minnesota and Macey Kilty of Wisconsin repeating at Cadet national champions.
Now a two-time Fargo champion, Kilty, who took home Outstanding Wrestler honors, won all five of her matches by either technical fall or pin. In the 127-pound finals, the newly crowned 2017 Cadet Pan American champion defeated Wisconsin teammate Ashton Cadman with a 10-0 tech fall. It was Kilty’s only match of the tournament that went into the second period.
“I had a plan of going out and dominating everyone in the first period, but it’s alright because I still controlled the match and got to my attacks,” Kilty said. “Me and my coach just really focused [on getting to my attacks] at Fargo camp and just being the aggressor. A lot of these girls aren’t used to people pushing on them, and it just opens up a lot of things.”
Shilson picked up her third Fargo title and second at the Cadet level, wrestling this weekend at 94 pounds. In her two days of competition, she outscored her opponents, 32-2. Her semifinals match this morning against Genesis Quirarte of California lasted only 30 seconds as she rolled her way to a 10-0 win. In the finals, she stopped Taryn Martin of Ohio with a 10-0 tech fall.
“I take it all as just another tournament and just another match. I just have to stay focused,” Shilson said. “I’ve been working out a lot with my trainer, and my coaches have been helping me a ton with my technique. My trainer has been helping me out with the mental side of it and my nutrition.”
So far this season, Shilson has won the Junior and Cadet folkstyle national tournaments and secured her spot on the 2017 U.S. Cadet Women’s Freestyle World Team for a chance to represent the United States at the UWW Cadet World Championships in Athens, Greece, this summer.
Fellow Cadet World Team member Kelani Corbett of Hawai’i put together a pair of come-from-behind wins on Tuesday morning, defeating Tristan Kelly of Colorado in the semis before storming back against Kiana Pugh of Wisconsin in the finals at 152 pounds. Late in the first period against Pugh, Corbett scored on a hip toss for four and shortly followed it up with a takedown to take a 6-4 lead into the second period. She went on to win the bout 8-5 for her first Fargo championship.
Olivia Shore, who will also wrestle at the Cadet World Championships, won her weight handily, sealing her championship performance with a pair of tech falls in the semis and finals. Shore’s momentum was unmatched in the finals, when she took out Washington’s Kenzie Cormier early in the second period with a 12-1 tech.
History was made at 112 pounds and 122 pounds.
Stefana Jelacic (112) became Arizona’s first women’s freestyle national champion at any level, when she beat Viktorya Torres of Washington with a pair of first-period takedowns for a 6-4 win. To land a spot in the finals, Jelacic defeated Peyton Prussin of Nevada with a 13-3 tech fall.
“It feels pretty good,” Jelacic said. “I came here last year wanting to win it, and I took third. But this year, I got what I came for. I’m proud of myself, and I want to thank the other girls for encouraging me. I’m glad I could be the first girl [to win a national championship for Arizona], and I hope women’s wrestling grows in Arizona, now that they have a national champion.”
At 122 pounds, Illinois was guaranteed its first Cadet women’s freestyle champion as teammates Louisa Schwab and Randi Robinson battled it out in the finals. Schwab walked away with a 5-0 decision.
Four states boasts multiple Cadet women’s freestyle champions this weekend, including California, Ohio, Oregon and Wisconsin, which each had two.
Hailing from California, Emily Se and Jasmin Clarke produced the only two pins of the finals. Se picked up a fall over Hunter Robinson of Texas in 5:50, while Clarke took out Tionna Collins from Kentucky in 1:10.
Se’s and Clarke’s performances played only a small part in California winning its sixth-straight Cadet women’s team title. Cadet women have only been competing at Fargo for seven years.
California picked up 102 team points, defeating team runner-up Texas (71) by 31 points. Illinois came in third with 52 points.
Joining Shore as a national champion for Ohio was 117-pounder Leilah Castro. Similar to her teammate, Castro sailed to her first Fargo title with a 12-0 tech fall over Sophia Smith of North Dakota.
At 180 pounds, Natalie Kemp became the second Wisconsin champ of the day, bulldozing her way past Gabrielle Hamilton of Illinois with a 6-2 decision.
Oregon’s two champs came at 132 pounds and 164 pounds.
Sarah Conner trailed, 5-2, with 10 seconds left in the 132-pound finals against Dalia Garibay of California. Conner hit a lateral drop on the edge for four points to give her a 6-5 lead. She fought off several attacks from Garibay in the final seconds, giving up only a step out and winning 6-6 on criteria.
At 164 pounds, Bailey Dennis earned a late second-period takedown while holding onto a 1-1 criteria lead for a 3-1 win over Elisa Robinson of Kansas.
Other champs were Brelane Huber of Idaho at 106 pounds and Nia Miranda of Texas at 144 pounds.
The Junior women’s freestyle tournament starts Wednesday morning at 3 p.m. CT. All the action can be seen live on Flowrestling.org.
