Junior Freestyle semifinals set in Fargo, as five past Junior champions advance in Monday morning’s quarterfinals

FARGO, N.D. – All five of the Junior Nationals champions in the field have advanced to the semifinals in men’s freestyle at the USMC Junior Nationals at the Fargodome on Monday morning.
Returning Junior National freestyle champions Anthony Artalona of Florida (145) and Jake Allar of Minnesota (160) reached the semifinals and continued their dominance in the tournament.
Artalona powered through his quarterfinal, scoring a 12-2 technical fall over Logan Jensen of Utah. He will battle talented Sam Sasso of Pennsylvania in the semifinals.
Likewise, Allar posted a technical fall in the semifinals, stopping fellow Minnesotan Austin Brenner of Minnesota, 10-0. He will battle Tyler Dow of Wisconsin, a UWW Junior Greco-Roman champion, in the semifinals.
There are three 2016 Junior Greco-Roman champions who have reached the finals, Brendon Garcia of Colorado (106), Haydn Maley of Oregon (195) and Brandon Metz of North Dakota (285).
Garcia had a tough quarterfinals bout, holding off a late charge by Studd Morris of Oklahoma, 8-6. He will battle
Christopher Trelli of Connecticut in the semifinals. Garcia was second last year in Junior freestyle, and is aiming to win them both this year.
Maley had a wide-open match which saw 33 points scored, as he earned a 22-11 technical fall over Darrell Mason of Illinois in his quarterfinal. He will battle Jace Punke of Illinois in the semifinals.
Metz advanced to the semifinals, after beating Jon Spaulding of Ohio in the quarters. His semifinals matchup is Zach Muller of Illinois.
Garcia was one of five 2016 Junior Freestyle runners-up who have advance to the semifinals, along with Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio (120), Rayvon Foley of Michigan (120), Paul Konrath of Indiana (126) and Anthony Cassioppi of Illinois (286). One of the 2016 Junior Freestyle runners-up in the field lost in the quarterfinals, Max Wohlabaugh of Florida, who fell to Zachary Braunagel of Illinois, 5-4.
Two 2016 Cadet National freestyle champions advanced to the semifinals, Jared Franek of North Dakota (152) and Aaron Brooks of Maryland (170). Three other 2016 Cadet Nationals freestyle champions were beaten during the session.
D’Emilio and Sasso were among four 2015 Cadet National champions in the 2017 Junior semifinals, joined by Joe Lee of Indiana (160) and Jacob Warner of Illinois (195).
There were no USA Wrestling Junior Triple Crown winners last year.
Four 2017 Junior Folkstyle National champions reached the semifinals, keeping alive their hopes for a Triple Crown, including Konrath, Cassioppi, Daniel Kimball of Iowa (100) and Max Lyon of Iowa (182). Four others were beaten in this session.
