by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Four American Greco-Roman wrestlers, including three 2017 World Team members, landed in the top 20 of United World Wrestling’s July Greco world rankings, which were released today.
Holding the highest ranking for the U.S. is Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) at 80 kg/176 lbs. His most recent competition was University Nationals in Akron, Ohio, last month, where he won gold. Internationally in 2017, Speiller has claimed gold at the Dave Schultz Memorial International and Cerro Pelado, while earning silver at the Grand Prix of Hungary.
World Team members G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/Sunkist Kids), Ben Provisor (Stevens Point, Wisc./New York AC) and Pat Smith (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm).
Hancock moved up a spot from last month’s rankings to No. 16 at 98 kg/216 lbs. The Pan American bronze medalist will represent the United States at the UWW Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland, Aug. 1-6, before heading to Paris, France, to compete in the Senior World Championships, Aug. 21-26.
Provisor jumped into the rankings after producing a silver medal at the Tbilisi Grand Prix in June. He chimes in at No. 17 at 85 kg/187 lbs. The Greco veteran won the Pan American championships shortly after making his first U.S. Senior World Team.
At 71 kg/156 lbs., Smith, another Pan Am gold medalist, stays put at No. 20. Smith will represent the U.S. at the World Championships for the first time in his career, after knocking off reigning World Team member Chris Gonzalez at the Trials.
