United World Wrestling announced its top seeds for all three styles for the 2017 World Championships in Paris, France, Aug. 21-26. The U.S. earned five seeds, including three No. 1 spots.
On the freestyle side, 2015 World champion and 2016 Olympic champion Kyle Snyder is the top-seed at 97 kg/213 lbs., and James Green, a three-time World Team member and 2015 World bronze medalist, takes the No. 1 seed at 70 kg/154 lbs.
2016 World champion Logan Stieber will enter the World Championships as the No. 2 seed at 61 kg/134 lbs.
Two women’s freestyle World Teamers were granted seeds. 2016 World silver medalist Alli Ragan is No. 1 at 60 kg/132 lbs. Helen Maroulis, the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in wrestling, holds the No. 2 seed at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. However, Maroulis is expected to compete at 58 kg/127.5 lbs. in Paris.
The top seeds were based on a series of points awarded to wrestlers who competed at the 2016 Olympic Games, 2016 Senior World Championships and the 2017 Senior Continental championships.
In each style, only the top four seeds are given per weight. Any wrestler who doesn’t compete forfeits that spot the next ranked wrestler moves into the seed.
