U.S. women cruise to Cadet Pan American title with six champs and nine total medals

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – A nine-for-nine medal haul from the U.S. women put the exclamation point on a captivating second day of wrestling at the Cadet Pan American Championships.
Six Americans successfully navigated to the top of the medal stand on Saturday, all of whom displayed a high degree of separation from their respective field of competitors.
Leading the pack of U.S. champions was 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist Macey Kilty (Stratford, Wis.). Going by the scoreboard Kilty wrestled to perfection, winning all three of her bouts by technical fall, all the while not surrendering a single point.
In the 60 kg/132 lbs. title match, Kilty controlled Mexico’s Susana Lozano Veytia to a 12-0 win. She cemented her victory with an emphatic single leg takedown to the back that netted her four points and the gold medal.
“I just got to my attacks, and just been doing what I’ve been working on with my coach and everything, and just looked for my shots, and just let the results take care of themselves,” Kilty said.
With a trip to the Junior World Championships on the horizon, Washington’s Cameron Guerin (Yakima, Wash.) looked every bit a World-medal threat during her run to the 52 kg/114 lbs. championship.
Guerin qualified for the finals courtesy of a 43-second pin and 10-0 technical fall in her first two bouts. The score was somewhat closer in the gold-medal match against Mexico’s Andrea Lopez Martinez, however, Guerin was in control throughout and came away with a 7-1 win.
Two-time Cadet World Team member Caitlyn Walker imposed a dynamic top game on her three opponents to claim the 40 kg/88 lbs. gold medal. Walker opened round-robin play with an 11-0 technical fall over silver medalist Mayerly Ibarra Caicedo of Ecuador. She then pinned both Peru’s Monet Valencia Janampa and Venezuela’s Eliannelys Luna to seal the gold.
“Well, my first match I was nervous. I always get nervous my first match, but after that, I saw my other girls wrestling and I was like ‘I got this,’” Walker said.
Throwing her name in the hat for most-dominant performance was 46 kg/101 lbs. champion Angel Rios (Arvada, Colo.). The up-and-coming American talent notched three pins and a 10-0 technical fall to stand atop a five-woman round-robin bracket at day’s end.
The 65 kg/143 lbs. gold medal was awarded to 2016 Cadet Nationals champion Hannah Ramos (Kenosha, Wis.). She won two matches on the day to secure her Pan American title, the first coming by fall over Peru’s Krizia Roa Ortega and the second a 10-0 blanking of Ecuador’s Vicky Cevillano Porozo.
Wrapping up the list of U.S. gold medalists is Montana’s own Tilynne Vasquez (Kalispell, Mont.) at 49 kg/108 lbs. Vasquez wrestled two matches on her road to gold. She picked up a pin over Mexico’s Mercedes Castillo Bernal in the semifinals before taking out Canada’s Melissa Fryer in the championship bout, 6-1.
A pair of 2017 USAW Cadet Folkstyle Nationals champions earned silver medals for the U.S. in Buenos Aires.
Samara Chavez (Arlington, Texas) posted a 2-1 record in a four-woman round-robin bracket at 43 kg/94 lbs. to claim silver. Her only defeat came in round one to eventual champion Fernanda Aldaz Lopez of Ecuador, 4-2.
Tiyahna Askew (Lawrenceville, Ga.) qualified for the 70 kg/154 lbs. finals by winning a back-and-forth semifinal battle over Brazil’s Thaissa Anibal Ribeiro, 12-6. She was bested by Argentina’s Linda Machuca in the gold-medal match, 12-0. Machuca was awarded the Golden Boot as the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
The final U.S. medal came from two-time Faro champion Michaela Beck (New York, N.Y.) who earned the bronze at 56 kg/123 lbs. Beck was well on her way to gold after dominating her first three opponents of the day by scores of 10-0, 10-0 and 7-2. An injury suffered in her third match forced Beck to forfeit her final bout, dropping her to third place in the five-woman field.
With a landmark nine medals earned, the U.S. won first place in the team race with 86 team points and plenty room to spare. Mexico finished as the runners-up with 59 team points, and Canada wound up in third place with 57 team points.
The Cadet Pan American Championships will conclude on Sunday afternoon at the Gimnasio Polideportivo CENARD in Buenos Aires with the men’s freestyle competition. Action will begin at 12 p.m. (ET) and can be viewed live by U.S. residents on Trackwrestling.com.
