KRAGUJEVAC, Serbia – Barrett Stanghill (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) placed fifth at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. on the first day of the Lubomir Ivanovic Gedza Memorial International, a Senior Greco-Roman tournament which started on Saturday.

Stanghill opened with a 3-0 loss to 2016 World University champion Erik Szilvassy of Hungary in the quarterfinals. When Szilvassy won his semifinal bout to reach the championship match, Stanghill was drawn back into repechage.

He dropped a 1-1 decision to Nikolai Dobrev of Serbia in the bronze-medal match. Dobrev has hit for passivity penalty midway through the first period to give Stanghill a 1-0 lead, but Stanghill was penalized for passivity late in the period to tie it up at 1-1. There were no points scored in the second period, in spite of some hard pummeling and scoring attempts by both wrestlers.

Dobrev has been fifth in the European U23 Championships the last two years.

Stanghill, a 2017 University Nationals champion, is a Montana native and a product of the NMU-OTS program. He was third at the 2017 U.S. Senior Open.

Medal match results will be posted when available in the other weight classes.

The U.S. has two athletes at the event. Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Minnesota Storm), a member of both the freestyle and Greco-Roman National Teams this year, will compete at 98 kg/215 lbs. on Sunday. Zillmer is currently No. 2 in Greco-Roman and No. 3 in freestyle based upon his results at the World Team Trials events.

Zillmer has a pigtail match against J. Ivetic of Serbia in the first round. Should he win, he will draw 2017 Asian Junior silver medalist Amirmohammad Noroozipasand of Iran in the quarterfinals.

A live stream can be found on the Serbia Federation’s You Tube Channel. There are also result updates on Serbia Federation website.
