Kyle Snyder of the USA flexes after a victory at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Organizers of the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia have changed the way they draw some of the weight classes this year, including the 97 kg/213 lbs. division which includes 2016 Olympic champion and 2015 World champion Kyle Snyder (Woodbine, Md./Titan Mercury WC).
Brackets which were posted on the Russian wrestling federation website wrestrus.ru, showed that in some weight classes, all of the foreign athletes were grouped together in the bracket, separated from the Russian entries. The pairings are not currently posted on the United World Wrestling website, where brackets have been hosted and a live webstream has been housed.
Snyder was placed in the top bracket at 97 kg, lumped together with three wrestlers from China, two from Mongolia, and one each from Iran and Kazakhstan.
The other 10 wrestlers in the weight class, all Russians, are in the bottom half-bracket. With this draw, Snyder would not wrestle a Russian until the gold-medal finals.
According to this pairing, Snyder opens against Chaganxhana of China, who was fifth in 2015 Dmitri Korkin Tournament in Russia.
Among the Russians on the other side are:
- Vladislav Baytsaev (2016 Yarygin Champion, 2015 Military World champion, 2x European medalist)
- Rasul Magomedov (2016 Ali Aliev Tournament champion)
- Yuri Belonovskiy (2010 World University champion, 3rd in Yarygin two times)
In 2016, Snyder placed third at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, losing to eventual 2016 Russian Olympian Anzor Boltukaev in the semifinals. Boltukaev moved up to 125 kg for the Yarygin this year, placing second on Saturday.
Snyder took a week off from his college season at Ohio State to compete at the Yarygin Grand Prix. This is a similar arrangement to last year, when Snyder came out of redshirt to wrestle for the Buckeyes for the second semester, but was still able to enter some international tournaments during the season. Snyder won the NCAA heavyweight title last year for Ohio State, and is currently ranked No. 1 at heavyweight for his junior season.
Only 10 U.S. men have ever won this event. The last American men’s freestyle champion was Steve Mocco at 120kg/264 lbs. in 2009. All 10 of the winners were Olympians during their career. Among these winners were four Olympic champions – Dave Schultz, Kendall Cross, Tom Brands and Kurt Angle.
They did a similar pairing at 65 kg/143 lbs., where they placed the 11 international wrestlers in the top of the draw, and the 19 Russian entries in the bottom of the draw.
The U.S. has won three medals so far in the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, all in women’s freestyle, with a gold medal from Tamyra Mensah (69 kg), a silver medal from Sarah Hildebrandt (55 kg) and a bronze medal from Alli Ragan (60 kg).
