Bearcat Open showcases talents from numerous women's college programs prior to WCWA Nationals

LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree University, which placed a strong second at the 2017 NWCA National Duals earlier in January, hosted the Bearcat Open on their campus today. This event was a final tune-up competition for many of the athletes and teams prior to the 2017 WCWA Women’s College Nationals, Feb. 10-11 at Oklahoma City University.
About 30 college teams and clubs were represented in the tournament, which featured just short of 200 athletes.
Host McKendree did not have an individual champion, but a pair of Bearcat wrestlers competing unattached won gold medals on their home mats, Hailey Lilly at 123 pounds and Nahiela Magee at 170 pounds. Lilly beat Dajan Treder of the Jimmie Wrestling Club in the finals, 4-3. Magee won by forfeit over McKendree teammate Brandy Lowe in the finals round.
The other eight individual champions all came from different universities. This result shows the increasing depth and talent with women’s college wrestling nationwide.
One of the most prominent winners was Amy Fearnside of Jamestown Univ. at 116 pounds, who defeated tough Cady Chessin of Menlo College by technical fall in the finals.
Fearnside has been a University World medalist and member of the U.S. Women’s National Team, but has yet to win a WCWA National title. She took an Olympic redshirt last year. Chessin was third at the 2016 WCWA Nationals at 116 pounds. Placing third in this weight was Tayler Rezuriz of McKendree, who was third at the 2016 WCWA Nationals at 109 pounds.
One of the winners does not compete for a women’s college varsity program, Skylar Grote of Lafayette College at 143 pounds. Grote edged McKendree’s veteran Jasmine Bailey in the finals, 4-3. Grote was a top U.S. wrestler at the UWW Junior level as a high school wrestler out of Blair Academy in New Jersey.
Niauni Hill of Lindenwood-Belleville, who was third in last year’s WCWA Nationals at 155, won that weight class at the Bearcat Open, scoring a 3-2 win over Iman Kazem of Menlo College in the finals. Kazem was fifth in the WCWA Nationals at this weight last year.
The other individual champions were Hiba Salem of Menlo College at 101, Maria Vidales of Emmanuel College at 109, Alicia Reyes of Missouri Valley College at 130, Koral Sugiyama of Campbellsville at 136 and Paige Baynes of Lindenwood at 191.
For sure these results will impact the seeds at the WCWA Nationals this year.
