KENOSHA, Wis.- The UIndy wrestling team pulled off a pair of upsets at the UW-Parkside Ranger Duals Saturday, opening its day with a 22-17 win over #1 St. Cloud State and closing it out with a 20-19 win over the #5 Rangers.
Indianapolis was not ranked in the top 25 in the most recent D2Wrestle.com rankings.
UIndy 22 - #1 St. Cloud State 17
The Greyhounds (8-5), now winners of four straight, are the first to beat the top-ranked Huskies on the season. The last loss taken by SCSU (10-1), the defending national champions, came last season on Jan. 9, to Notre Dame (OH), with the Huskies winning 19 straight until facing UIndy today.
After an SCSU win at 125, Joe Kieffer (9-6) picked up the first Greyhound victory of the day with a 5-4 decision over Jarred Oftedahl at 133. At 141, #4 Nick Crume earned a 13-3 major decision over Ryan Rodorgio to put UIndy ahead 7-4, and the Greyhounds would never trail again in the dual.
The Huskies took a 15-11 win at 149, but back-to-back pins from Heath Lange and Barry McGinley for the Greyhounds pushed the lead to 16-6 UIndy. Lange (16-2) pinned Travis Holt in 3:37, good for his 11th fall of the season. McGinley (14-10), up against the nation's #8 165-pound wrestler in Gabe Fogerty, earned a pin in 5:54.
St. Cloud took wins at 174, 197 and 285, with Taylor DeLong (13-4) picking up a 6-2 win at 184, but it was not enough, as UIndy took the 22-17 win.
UIndy 20 - #5 Wisconsin-Parkside 19
In a dual win that came down to tiebreaker criteria, the Greyhounds again came out on top over a top 10 team.
After the host Rangers (6-2) opened the dual with wins at 125 and 133, Crume took a 9-4 win over Christian Robertson at 141 that was the start of four straight Greyhound wins. Kyle Barkovich (9-7) recorded what would prove to be the most integral win of the day at 149, pinning Derek Gill in 2:31.
Lange took revenge for one of his two losses on the year at 157, besting #12 Brett Scores 13-11 to put UIndy up 12-6. McGinley then came through with a tech fall, 19-4, in 6:52 over Josh Anthony to push the score to 16-6 UIndy.
After the gauntlet of #1-#2-#6 from the Rangers at 174, 184 and 197, after which UWP lead 19-16, it came down to the heavyweight bout. An 11-5 win from #11 Dylan Faulkenberg (19-6) over Matt Halverson left the team score deadlocked 19-19, with the Greyhounds taking the final team point on criteria, with Barkovich's pin as the deciding factor.
Next up for UIndy is another ranked team in #8 Findlay Wednesday. Wrestling from Findlay begins at 7:00 p.m., with the Greyhounds then opening the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule Saturday at Truman State versus the host Bulldogs and Drury.
