Two-time Junior World Team member Nick Roberts, 23, found dead on Pitt-Johnstown campus

USA Wrestling has received word that Nick Roberts, 23, who competed on two Junior World freestyle teams for the United States, was found dead Saturday night on the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown campus where he was a student.
Roberts, who was from Hooversville, Pa., was a three-time Pennsylvania state champion for North Star High School and was very active in USA Wrestling programs. He competed on 2010 and 2011 U.S. Junior World freestyle team, after winning the Junior World Team Trials both years. Roberts was fifth in the Junior World Championships in 2010 at 50 kg. He was a Junior Nationals champion in both Greco-Roman and freestyle in 2009.
Roberts attended Ohio State immediately after high school, where he was an NCAA qualifier as a freshman, He transferred to UPJ, where he won an NCAA Div. II national title in 2016. According to media reports, he was injured this year and was unable to compete at the end of the season.
“This is very sad news,” said USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick, who coached Roberts on two Junior World Teams. “I enjoyed having him on my first two Junior World Teams. He was very outgoing, a fun kid to be around. He was a great addition to our teams. Not only was he an excellent wrestler, but he was a great teammate. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his team and his coaches.

Nick Roberts, a national champion wrestler for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, was found dead late Saturday evening in an apartment on the campus in Richland Township.
The Cambria County Coroner’s Office and Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death.
Tammy Barbin, Pitt-Johnstown’s executive director of community and public relations, confirmed Roberts’ identity around 11:20 Saturday night.
“We don’t know anything more at this point,” Barbin said. “We’re waiting. We’re being told that foul play is absolutely not suspected.”
