HAVANA, Cuba –
Seven more U.S. wrestlers from the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club claimed medals in day-two action of the Cerro Pelado International in Havana, Cuba. The U.S. was represented by 11 wrestlers on Thursday, who collected one gold, one silver and five bronze medals.
Nazar Kulchytskyy put together the Red, White and Blue’s lone championship performance on the day, taking gold at 70 kg/154 lbs. He opened the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall over Serguei Randon of Cuba, before taking out fellow American Mike DePalma by fall to cruise to the finals. There, he faced Cuba’s Ernesto Sanchez, who he defeated 11-1.
Also earning a spot in the finals was heavyweight Bobby Telford. The former Hawkeye claimed wins over China’s Hai Shang, 5-0, and Cuba’s Juan Carlos Mason, 5-2. Waiting for him in the championship match was Cuban Yudenny Alpajon, the 2016 Cerro Pelado champion. Alpajon edged out Telford, 2-1, sending the American home with a silver.
Andrew Hochstrasser and Kanen Storr earned both bronze medals up for grabs at 61 kg/134 lbs.
Hochstrasser suffered a 10-0 loss to 2014 World bronze medalist Yowlys Bonne of Cuba in the opening bout. He was pulled into the repechage, where he faced Cuba’s Cristian Solenzal, who he beat 5-5.
Iowa State freshman Storr, the 2017 Dave Schultz Memorial silver medalist, dominated teammate and Golden Grand Prix bronze medalist Alan Waters in the third-place bout, 9-2.
After falling to Kulchytskyy, DePalma came back to claim bronze at 70 kg, winning by injury default.
At 86 kg/189 lbs., Vic Avery recorded a solid pair of wins over Xiad Sun of China, 12-0, and Lazaro Hernandez of Cuba, 10-5, before getting handed an 8-1 loss by Cuba’s Yuriesky Torreblanca. Avery faced American Timmy McCall in the bronze-medal bout, where he walked away with a 12-7 win.
Wrapping up the bronze medals for the U.S. was Dom Bradley at 125 kg/275 lbs. Bradley opened competition with a 10-0 tech against Jesse Ruiz of Mexico. He dropped his next bout to eventual champion Alpajon in a tight 4-0 battle. He stormed back for a bronze medal, taking a 10-0 won over China’s Dezheng Jiang.
