KLIPPAN, Sweden – Eight U.S. Cadet women have advanced to the second day of competition in the Cadet division at the Klippan Lady Open, based upon their results on Friday.
Three of these young women went undefeated on Friday, Caitlynn Walker (Hatboro, Pa./Mohawk WC) at 40 kg/88 kg, Stefana Jelacic (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) at 52 kg/115 lbs. and Macey Kilty (Stratford, Wis./World Gold WC) at 56 kg/124 lbs.
Kilty was a 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist, and Walker placed seventh at the 2016 Cadet World Championships. Jelacic was second in the 2016 Cadet World Team Trials behind Kilty.
This tournament is not using the normal UWW bracketing structure. It is being contested in a two-pool, vertical pairing system, similar to what was used many years ago within international wrestling.
All of the wrestlers remaining, including those with one loss, are still eligible for medals, which will be determined based upon results on Saturday.
“We have a mostly inexperienced team of Cadets. It was a tough day for us, but there was some great learning going on. We had a meeting with the girls after. The learning is the crucial part of this trip. The experience of traveling internationally, feeling great foreign competitors, and being thrown adversity is priceless. Sometimes, you have to experience the next level to buy into changing your technique and training. Long term, our Cadets will be better for the tough matches and losses they face today. It is all a part of the process,” said U.S. coach Emma Randall.
The Cadet division will be completed on Saturday, with the conclusion of the pool matches in the morning and then the medal match pairings.
A team of U.S. Senior women have weighed in and received their draws. A separate article with the pairings will be posted shortly about the Senior team.
