USA Wrestling and the Jacob Curby Foundation are pleased to present the 2016 recipients of the Jacob Curby Memorial Award.

Established by USA Wrestling in 2010, it recognizes a Greco-Roman athlete from each of our two Olympic Training Centers, Marquette, Mich. and Colorado Springs, Colo. that has displayed strong personal character and commitment to the sport of Greco-Roman wrestling displayed by Jake in his time on the U.S. National Team. The 2016 recipients are Spenser Mango and Randon Miranda.

Spenser Mango had a spectacular career in Greco that began in 2004 where he was a team mate of Jake Curby at Northern Michigan. Mango qualified for two Olympic teams, finishing eighth in 2008 and ninth in 2012, and six world championships teams (2009-15), finishing as high as fifth in 2013 and ’14. He was also a World University Games Champion, Junior World bronze medalist and seven-time U.S. Open champion. A member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), Spenser remains with the WCAP program as its coach.

David Curby, the Director of the Jacob Curby Foundation said, “The selection of Spenser Mango brings honor to this award and to Jake’s memory.”

Randon Miranda trains at the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site where he is a sport science major. From Palmdale, CA, Randon was a junior national champion in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.

His NMU-OTS head coach Rob Hermann says, “He loves wrestling and is always giving 100% on the mat. He has followed the training and tournament schedule which led to him making the 2016 UWW Junior World team. Randon has been great for our program both on and off the mat.”

Randon and Spenser are now listed on plaques along with past winners to be mounted in the Superior Dome in Marquette, Mich. and in the Bill Farrell Wrestling Facility in Colorado Springs.

Presenting the plaques prior to the Greco-Roman finals of the Dave Schultz Memorial International were Coaches Rob Hermann and Matt Lindland, as well as Dr. Dave Curby, Jacob's father and president of the Jacob Curby Foundation.
