Roberts, Martinez, Hancock win golds as USA gets seven medals at S.A. Lavrikov Tournament in Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – Led by three individual champions, the USA collected seven medals at the S.A. Lavrikov Greco-Roman Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.


Individual gold medalists were Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./NMU-OTS) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/OTC) at 85 kg/187 lbs. and G’Angelo Hancock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 130 kg/286 lbs.


The U.S. team included athletes from the U.S. Marine Corps team, from the Northern Michigan University – Olympic Training Site (NMU-OTS) and a number of other top Senior level athletes.


Roberts, a junior at Northern Michigan, had a 3-0 record in the tournament. Roberts won the U23 World Team Trials in October and went 1-1 in the U23 World Championships in November. He is a past two-time Junior World Team member.


Martinez, a member of the 2015 and 2016 U.S. Senior World Team, finished with an impressive 4-0 record.


Hancock, who competed at three World Championships in 2017, went 3-0 at heavyweight. Hancock wrestled in the 2017 Senior, U23 and Junior World Championships. He has recently moved up to 130 kg from 98 kg, where he competed at the Junior and Senior Worlds. He was at 130 kg for the U23 World Championships.


Winning silver medals for Team USA were Randon Miranda (Palmdale, Calif./NMU-OTS) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Corey Hope (Colorado Springs, Colo./OTC) at 75 kg/165 lbs. Miranda went 2-1 in the tournament, while Hope went 3-1.


Miranda has been busy this fall, winning golds at the Malar Cup and the Klippan Cup in Sweden, and placing second at the U23 World Team Trials to his teammate Roberts. Miranda was a member of the 2017 Junior World Team.


Bronze medals went to Peyton Walsh (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) at 80 kg/176 lbs. and Eric Fader (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) at 130 kg/286 lbs.


Two U.S. wrestlers placed fifth, Raymond Bunker (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps) at 71 kg/156 lbs. and George Sikes IV (Fort Pierce, Fla./NMU-OTS) at 85 kg/187 lbs.


Many of these athletes will continue on to compete at the Haavisto Cup in Ilmajoki, Finland this coming weekend.
