Pletcher, Martin and Moore punctuate Ohio State championship at 36th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS – Despite missing three All-Americans from its lineup, the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes captured the team title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational for the second-consecutive year.
The Buckeyes found themselves atop the standings with three individual champions and 155.5 team points, 15.5 ahead of runner-up Michigan. NCAA champion Myles Martin, All-American Kollin Moore and sophomore Luke Pletcher punctuated the Ohio State effort with first-place finishes.
Martin, the No. 1 seed at 184 pounds, took out 2016 Big Ten champion Domenic Abounader of Michigan in a gritty finals tussle, 8-5. Martin picked up bonus-point wins in four of his five matches this weekend.
At 197 pounds, Moore stunned Virginia Tech All-American Jared Haught with a first-period fireman’s carry to a pin, reaffirming his No. 1 national ranking. Moore and Haught are the top-two returning place winners from last year’s NCAA Championship at 197 pounds.
Pletcher capped off a remarkable run at 133 pounds with a 9-2 win over Josh Terao of American. Entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed, Pletcher upended top seed Stevan Micic of Michigan 7-5 in a critical semifinal on Saturday morning.
The second-place Wolverine bunch picked up individual crowns from past All-Americans Alec Pantaleo and Adam Coon. Pantaleo took out Ohio State All-American Micah Jordan for the 157-pound title, 10-3. It was a touch tougher for Coon, who needed overtime to get past Arizona State All-American Tanner Hall, 4-2, at 285 pounds.
Arizona State’s Zahid Valencia, the No. 1 ranked 174-pounder in the land, won a gritty 9-6 bout over returning NCAA finalist Bo Jordan of Ohio State in the finals. It was Valencia’s second win over Jordan this season. Valencia was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Two freshmen were able to rise to the top of the podium with exceptional runs in Las Vegas. Utah Valley’s Taylor LaMont won a tight 4-3 contest over Edinboro’s Sean Russell at 125 pounds. Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis cruised to a comfortable 8-2 win over Northern Iowa’s Josh Alber at 141 pounds. Both LaMont and Diakomihalis upended past NCAA finalists on their road to the finals.
Also claiming individual titles were Central Michigan All-American Justin Oliver at 149 pounds and Virginia Tech All-American David McFadden at 165 pounds.
