Retherford, Tomasello, Dieringer among third-place finishers at U.S. Open Championships

LAS VEGAS – The U.S. Open men’s freestyle competition ran through remaining consolations and medal matches on Saturday morning at the South Point Arena.
U.S. Open placements were awarded to the top-eight finishers in each weight class.
Among the athletes finishing in third place were past NCAA champions Nathan Tomasello at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., Zain Retherford at 65 kg/143 lbs. and Alex Dieringer at 74 kg/163 lbs.
Tomasello took out a game Frank Perrelli in the 57 kg third place match, 9-7. Perrelli led 7-5 late, but a Tomasello takedown and gutwrench as time expired sealed the win for the Ohio State product.
Retherford, a two-time NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy recipient for Penn State, gutted out a 4-3 win over defending U.S. Open champion Jimmy Kennedy.
After picking up a buzzer-beating takedown in the consolation semifinals to upend Chris Perry, 3-2, three-time NCAA champion Dieringer capped off a third-place finish at 74 kg with a first-period fall over Arizona State’s Anthony Valencia.
Josh Kindig escaped a bedlam battle with past NCAA champion Cody Brewer, winning 16-16 on criteria to claim third place at 61 kg/134 lbs.
Paris International champion Chase Pami continued his resurgence with a 12-6 decision over NCAA champion Jason Nolf in the 70 kg/154 lbs. third-place match.
At 86 kg/189 lbs. Nicholas Heflin outlasted NCAA champion Bo Nickal, 10-6, to finish in third place.
2016 U.S. Open champion Dom Bradley rebounded from a tough semifinal loss to take third place at 125 kg/275 lbs. with a 2-1 win over Bobby Telford.
The men’s freestyle finals will be held at 6 p.m. (PT) on Saturday and can be viewed live on Flowrestling.com.
