Five double champions crowned during the Western Junior freestyle finals

Las Vegas, Nev.- The Western Junior freestyle competition concluded Friday afternoon at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas.
A tournament with 340 individual entries, 15 took home the title of Western Junior freestyle champion and five of them took home double titles.
Double champions include Haiden Drury at 113 pounds, Mason Phillips at 138 pounds, Nelson Brands at 160 pounds, Kaden Sauer at 195 pounds, and Casey Jumps at 220 pounds.
Three of the five double title winners claimed technical falls in their final match.
The most exciting match of the night was at 113 pounds where Drury met Cason Sauriol of California. The champion headed into the second period down eight points and placing no points on the board yet. Drury came back in the second period to score 9 points to win the title, 9-8.
“I started off kinda slow, it was my first match of the but I started to warm up and do what I do. I went over to Colorado Springs last week and training with the freestyle and Greco coaches and it’s paid off a lot,” Drury said.
Scoring tech. falls in all his matches at 138 pounds was Mason Phillips from Washington. Phillips secured his title after defeating Jacob Garcia from Arizona, 12-1. Phillips carried through his first two matches of the tournament without being scored on, it wasn’t until his finals match when Cole Matthews from Pennsylvania scored seven points on him.
“They were suppose to be tough [opponents]. They were good matches. My semi match was really good, I ended up teching him but he scored on me a few times. He was a real tough competitor,” Phillips said.
Four wrestlers this evening claimed tech. falls in their final bout among them were Jumps from Missouri and Brands from Iowa, along with Legend Lamer (126) from Oregon, Atilano Escobar (132) from Arizona and Brian Barnes (285) from Oklahoma. Finishing with the only pin in the finals was Brandon Martino at 170 pounds.
