UPDATE: 17 new champs crowned at Cadet Folkstyle Nationals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Isaac Salas of California won his first Cadet Folkstyle National championship, taking out two former Fargo champions in day-two action of the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

 

Named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, Salas had a big morning, advancing to the 106-pound finals with a dominant 9-2 win over 2016 Fargo freestyle champion at 88 pounds and 2017 Iowa state champion, Cullan Schriever in the semifinals.

 

Waiting for him in the finals was Missouri’s Jeremiah Reno, the 2016 freestyle national champion at 94 pounds. Salas struck first with a takedown in the first two minutes. He didn’t score again until halfway through the second period, when he scored the match-winning takedown.

 

“My main key was probably my ferociousness in most of my matches,” Salas said. “That last match was barely a win for me. The only wins I like are the ones that I dominate. Overall, I feel like I did improve from this tournament, and it was well worth coming out here.”

 

Indiana’s Colton Drousias, who wrestled the high school season at 106 pounds, went down a weight to 100 pounds. With a 10-3 win in the semifinals to start the day, Drousias cruised to the finals, where he met Logan Brown of Michigan.

 

Drousias took a comfortable 8-4 lead into the third period, but Brown looked for a comeback bid, taking down Drousias early in the third period. The Indiana native responded with and escape and takedown of his own, eventually putting Brown to his back for a fall in 5:26.

 

Pins seemed to be a theme for the Cadet finals with six other champions ending their matches by fall, including Chance Lamer (88), Dawson Sihavong (132), Michael Weber (145), Cade King (160), Lincoln Shinn (170) and Andy Garcia (285).

 

Sihavong, hailing from California, earned his pin over the No. 1 ranked freshman in the country and returning national champion Beau Bartlett.

 

Giving up six takedowns to trail 12-4 going into the third period, Sihavong came out on top of a crazy scramble, scoring a reversal and two nearfall points before sticking Bartlett’s shoulders to the mat in 4:26.

 

“I was surprised that I got the pin, but I was not surprised that Beau Bartlett was good on his feet. He’s always been,” Sihavong said. “I decided to give him my best position like he did to me. Mine was top and his was standing. We both gave it our all.”

 

2017 Montana state champion Weber had a solid showing at 145 pounds after failing to make weight to compete at 138 pounds. After escaping close matches in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Weber earned a spot in the 145-pound finals against 2017 Georgia state champion Drew Eller.

 

Weber controlled the match with a pair of takedowns and a reversal to lead 6-1 before ending the match with a third-period fall.

 

Also wrestling up a weight was 2017 Minnesota state champ at 195 pounds Daniel Kerkvliet, who wanted to challenge himself and compete at 220 pounds.

 

“I felt like I would get more matches [at 220 pounds],” Kerkvliet said. “195 looked a little thin so I decided to bump up. More speed was a big factor for me in the tournament.”

 

The two-time Minnesota state champ was dominant throughout the entire tournament, notching two wins by fall to advance to the finals against Luke Luffman of Illinois.

 

Kerkvliet, who weighed 196 the day before, bulldozed his way past the 2017 Illinois state champ, registering a 16-7 major decision.

 

Eight others were crowned 2017 Cadet Folkstyle national champions: Eli Griffin (94), Noah Surtin (113), Cleveland Belton (120), Marc Schaffer (126), Alex Facundo (138), Aaron Gandara (152), Ryan Cosio (182) and Ashton Sharp (195).

 

Folkstyle Nationals action continues tomorrow at 8 a.m. with the Kids and Masters tournaments.
