Contarino, Schartner finish up for USA on final day at Veterans Greco-Roman Worlds in Finland

SEINAJOKI, Finland – The two final U.S. athletes fell short of medals on last day of competition at the Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships on Sunday.


Placing fourth in their weights with 0-3 records were Steve Contarino of Palmetto, Fla. (Div. F, 97 kg) and James Schartner of Frederick, Md. (Div. G, 58 kg).


Contarino fell to athletes from Austria, Ukraine and Russia. In his final bout, Contarino led 3-0 over Aleksandr Petrov of Russia, but in the final minute was hit with an arm throw and pinned, ending his chance at a medal.


Schartner’s losses came to opponents from Kazakhstan, Russia and Romania.


Over the three-day tournament, the 10-athlete USA team came home with five medals, all which were won on Saturday. Chris Brown of Boyds, Md. won the gold medal at Div. E 85 kg, becoming the first U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to win two Veterans World titles.


Winning silver medals were Mark LeVasseur of Buffalo Lake, Minn. (Div. E, 58 kg) and Bruce Moe of Hillsboro, N.D. (Div. E, 76 kg). Bronze medals went to Gabe Beauperthuy of Colorado Springs, Colo. (Div. B., 130 kg) and Constantin Tintea of New Britain, Pa. (Div. E, 85 kg).


The Veterans World Freestyle Championships will be held in Walbrzych, Poland, October 7-9.
