SEINAJOKI, Finland – Chris Brown of Boyds, Md. won the Div. E 85 kg gold medal, becoming the first U.S. Greco-Roman wrestler to win two Veterans World titles with an impressive victory on Saturday.
Brown has a 4-0 record in a five-athlete round-robin. In his final bout, he faced another unbeaten athlete, Marko Sarcanski of Serbia. Sarcanski led 1-0 at the break, but Brown scored a four-point throw on the edge in a scramble in the second period. Sarcanski added a passivity point, but Brown came away with a 4-2 win.
Brown ran around the mat with the U.S. flag after his historic win, then knelt in prayer with the flag around his shoulders in the middle of the mat, before going to his corner to celebrate with his teammates.
He won his first Veterans World gold medal in 2014. Brown has served a number of years as the USA team captain for the Veterans program.
Other past Veterans Greco-Roman World champions, with their year of victory, were: Ronald Hughes (2004), Valentin Kalika (2009), Gregg Stensgaard (2012), Moe Taheri (2013), Michael Tuck (2015), Steve Barkman (2015) and Shirzad Ahmadi (2015).
Winning silver medals were Mark LeVasseur of Buffalo Lake, Minn. (Div. E, 58 kg) and Bruce Moe of Hillsboro, N.D. (Div. E, 76 kg)
LeVasseur went 2-1 in his round-robin competition, scoring a technical falls over Tulegen Bertayev of Kazakhstan and Hannu Kumpulainen of Finland. His only loss was a 4-4 criteria match to eventual champion Jarmo Niskakangas of Finland.
Moe opened with wins over his Russian and Ukrainian opponents. Moe was leading 4-0 midway through the finals bout against Gheorghe Paduraru of Romania. Paduraru powered back with a strong second period, scoring his final two points late in the period for a 5-4 win. It is the third straight year that Moe has won a silver medal at the Veterans Worlds in Greco-Roman.
Bronze medals went to Gabe Beauperthuy of Colorado Springs, Colo. (Div. B., 130 kg) and Constantin Tintea of New Britain, Pa. (Div. E, 85 kg).
In his bronze-medal bout, Beauperthuy threw Gyula Papp of Hungary, to take a 5-1 lead, but when Papp could not finish, Beauperthuy won by injury default in 3:09. Beauperthuy has won two World medals this fall, after taking a bronze medal in Belt Wrestling in Kyrgyzstan a few weeks ago. He travels to Minsk, Belarus next weekend to compete in the Grappling World Championships.
Tintea finished with a 2-2 record in his five-athlete round robin to claim the bronze medal. He clinched the medal in his final match, with a 12-3 technical fall over Hasan Ozdemir of Turkey.
Sunday’s competition will be in Div. A (35-40 years), Div. F (61-65 years) and Div. G (66-70 years). Two U.S. athletes will compete, and their pairings are listed below.
