TBILISI, Georgia – The U.S. Greco-Roman squad ended the first day of competition at the 2016 Cadet World Championships without securing a medal as Jack Davis, the lone American to qualify for the evening session, dropped his bronze medal match to finish in fifth place at 58 kg/127.75 lbs.

The up-and-coming Davis surrendered two takedown-to-turn combinations in the first period to 2016 Cadet Asian bronze medalist Erbol Bakirov of Kyrgyzstan and was unable to make up the deficit. After adding a step out point, Davis fell by a final score of 8-1.

“I came out there and he got on top of me right off, and giving him the left underhook, and when he got on top, I’m just not the best at defending on bottom, so I need to get better at that,” explained Davis following his bronze medal match.

Davis posted a 2-2 record at 58 kg in the first international competition of his young career. He took down 2016 Nordic champion Anton Rosen of Sweden and Aleksander Mielewczyk of Poland to make the semifinals where he was defeated by eventual silver medalist Mohammad Mokhtari of Iran.

“It boots my confidence a lot. Coming here and just being able to get in the top five is amazing for my first ever international competition. Being here is a great opportunity, and just a really huge milestone for me,” he continued.

Peyton Omania, a USAW Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals runner-up in 2015, was the only other American to pick up a victory on Tuesday. Despite the win, Omania fell short of a medal match and finished in 11th place overall at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

2015 USAW Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals champion Malik Johnson finished in 10th place in the 50 kg/110 lbs. standings. He lost his opening bout to bronze medalist Abdullah Toprak of Turkey, 6-1.

Americans Real Woods and Cohlton Schultz both dropped their first round matches on Tuesday and finished outside the top ten at 54 kg/119 lbs. and 100 kg/220 lbs., respectively.

The Greco-Roman competition at the Cadet World Championships will resume tomorrow with the qualification and repechage rounds at 2 a.m. (ET) followed by the medal matches at 10 a.m. (ET).

Wrestling tomorrow for the U.S. will be Andrew Chambal at 42 kg/92.5 lbs., Mosha Schwartz at 46 kg/104.4 lbs., Max Wohlabaugh at 69 kg/152 lbs., Clay Lautt at 76 kg/167.2 lbs. and Brandon Whitman at 85 kg/185.4 lbs.
