CHOLPON-ATA, Kyrgyzstan - Gabe Beauperthuy of Colorado, who has been active in USA Wrestling’s non-Olympic style programs, placed fifth at the unlimited weight class in the “freestyle” of Belt wrestling on Wednesday.
Beauperthuy and Aaron Wendel, who competed at the 90 kg weight class, were the U.S. entries in the tournament, which featured two different styles of Belt wrestling.
Beauperthuy opened the “freestyle” Alysh event with a 7-0 victory over Marek Berezowski of Poland. In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by pin late in the match against Konstantin Koptev of Ukraine.
As there were no wrestle-backs in this single-elimination event, Beauperthuy finished with a 1-1 record. Based upon the points that he scored, Beauperthuy finished fifth in his weight class.
Wendel was pinned in his opening match of “freestyle” Alysh by Zhukaxon Abdurakhmanov of Uzbekistan and did not place in the top 10 of his weight class.
In the “Greco-Roman” Alysh event, Beauperthuy was defeated in his first match by pin by Inhat Davidchyk of Belarus. Wendel’s opening match in this style was against Hussein Rahut of Pakistan, but the result is not currently available.
“In freestyle Alysh, I beat Poland 7-0 then went against Ukraine. I got too big for my pants and tried a throw right off the bat and he stopped it where landed on back. In Greco Alysh, I lost to Belarus. I went for a throw and they rewarded him with the two points, as I did not have enough control. I had 18 seconds left and I had to try for something. I tried a throw and he stopped it where I landed on my back. I shook his hand and thanked him for the match,” said Beauperthuy.
Beauperthuy was a national-caliber Greco-Roman wrestler, and now competes on the Veterans level in freestyle and Greco-Roman. He is also active in the USA Wrestling Grappling and Beach Wrestling programs. He enjoyed attempting a different style at this event. Beauperthuy was considered a small heavyweight, as some of the contestants weighted between 350-400 pounds.
“I have been doing Belt for one month as I enjoy competition. It was an unbelievable competition, with lots of action and big throws. It required lots of strategy, technique and strength. I would love to do this again. The UWW refs were real good and all on the same page. I was just very honored to participate and be a sportsman here. I will practice for the next time a lot longer than a month and learn more. I had to come for the once-in-a-lifetime journey and I hope the USA participates in this event in the future,” said Beauperthuy.
Wendel has also competed in USA Wrestling events in Grappling and in Beach Wrestling.
These two Belt events were part of a full festival of Traditional Style wrestling events, billed by the organizers as the World Nomad Games, “an Olympics for Nomads in Kyrgyzstan.” There were many different traditional competitions, including wrestling matches while contestants were riding on horses.
Beauperthuy will have a very busy month of international wrestling events. After competing in the Belt Worlds in Kyrgyzstan, he will travel to Seinajoki, Finland to compete in the Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships. He has also earned the heavyweight spot on the U.S. Senior Grappling World Team, and will compete in Minsk, Belarus in both Gi Grappling and No-Gi Grappling.
