Clodgo wins gold at Pan American Olympic Qualifier in Texas; Lampe and Conder take bronzes

FRISCO, Texas - 2015 World Team member Erin Clodgo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) won a gold medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier on Friday.
The top two wrestlers in each of the six Olympic weight classes contested have qualified their nation for the Olympic Games. Clodgo was the only of the five U.S. team members who competed on Friday to qualify the nation for the Olympics.
Clodgo won the gold medal without a bout, as the other finalist, Lais Nunes de Olivera of Brazil, did not compete and forfeited the match to Clodgo. After the bout, Clodgo said she was disappointed that she didn’t get a finals match, but was very pleased with her effort today.
She had already qualified the USA for the Olympic Games at her weight class with an 8-0 semifinal match against 2011 Pan American Games champion Katerina Vidiaux Lopez of Cuba. She had lost her two previous matches to Videaux, avenging them with a dominant performance under pressure.
“For me that (semifinal) was my finals match. That was my push. That was my biggest match for me and if I could beat that, anything is possible,” Clodgo said after the semifinals.
Clodgo made her first World Team in 2015 and did not medal, and was a bronze medal winner at the 2015 Pan American Games where she lost to Vidiaux, 7-11. This was a big win for her after many years of competing on the international level.
“She got the match she came down here to win (against Vidiaux). We knew we needed that win to qualify the weight. he came down with the right frame of mind and got after it and got the job done so we’re really proud of her for qualifying at 63 kilos,” said Assistant National Coach Erin Tomeo.
The United States has now qualified two of the six women’s freestyle wrestling weight classes for the Rio Olympic Games. The USA had already qualified at 75 kg/165 lbs. when Adeline Gray won a World gold medal at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, Nev.
The U.S. had four women in the bronze-medal round tonight and two ended up winning bronze medals. They had all lost matches in the morning session, and were not able to qualify the USA for the Olympics at their weight class at this event.
Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) scored a 10-0 technical fall win over Yusneylys Guzman Lopez of Cuba in the bronze-medal match at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
She had lost in the quarterfinals to Carolina Castillo Hidalgo of Colombia, 1-4. Lampe finished with a 3-1 record, with a win in the preliminaries as well as a win in the repechage round to her credit.
“It was disappointing, I didn’t do what I came here to do, I didn’t do my job. But after that we talked about coming back and doing it for pride and doing it for ourselves, not just giving up and going home. I really wanted to prove that I can come back in those matches. You learn a lot about that kind of stuff. In your heart, it hurts you want to give up and go home like what is anything else mean if you don’t make it to the finals. Just coming back and getting a medal is positive. This is how tournaments work, if you lose you’ve got to come back and get bronze. I was proud of myself for that,” said Lampe.
At 53 kg/116.5 lbs., three-time U.S. World Team member Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP) was dominant in a 12-2 technical fall win over Luisa Valverde Melendres of Ecuador. She had only one other match, a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Jillian Gallays of Canada, by technical fall 2-12.
“Definitely not what I wanted for today. Going back out there, I had to go prove that I’m actually wanting to be here and I had to reset myself to get back in and wrestle another match, even if I didn’t want to,” said Conder.
Two other U.S. women were defeated in their bronze-medal matches to place fifth, Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC) at 58 kg/128 lbs. and Tamyra Mensah (Katy, Texas/Titan Mercury WC) at 69 kg/152 lbs.
Ragan was defeated in the bronze-medal round by Virginia Jimenez Fernandez of Venezuela, 5-8. Mensah was leading 5-4 late in the second period, was headlocked and pinned by Yudari Sanchez Rodriguez of Cuba in 5:39.
“There’s a lot more work we need to do as individuals and as a team for sure. We’re just on our heels a little bit too much, we’re not going forward. We are being complacent. We are resting in the match instead of being ahead of our opponents. We’re waiting for something to happen instead of making stuff happen. Our whole mentality has to change a little bit,” said Tomeo.
It was a big day for Canada, which won four gold medals and qualified all four weight classes for the Olympic Games. Canadian champions were Jillian Gallays (53 kg), Michelle Fazzari (58 kg) , Dorothy Yeats (69 kg) and Erica Wiebe (75 kg). Canada came in with two weight classes already qualified (48 kg, 63 kg), so it has now qualified a full six-athlete women’s team for the Olympic Games.
“We came here to qualify for weights. That was accomplished. We put a lot of work into preparing for this set of athletes. I’m ecstatic with the way we prepared for this.We’ve had a number of different camps. They are 100 percent invested. Our team was excited with the challenges so they just took it one step at a time,” said Canadian Women’s National Coach Leigh Vierling.
Canada had the most Olympic qualifications for the day with four (53 kg, 58 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg). Brazil secured three qualification spots (58 kg, 63 kg, 69 kg). Venezuela got two (53 kg, 75 kg), with one each for Argentina (48 kg), Colombia (48 kg) and the United States (63 kg).
The U.S. will have four more weight classes left to qualify. First, the U.S. Olympic Team Trials will be held in Iowa City, Iowa, April 9-10. Then, the USA will have to more chances to qualify those four weight classes, in Ulaanbaattar, Mongolia, April 22-24 and in Istanbul, Turkey, May 6-8.
“We have a lot of work to do. The athletes focus is on making the Olympic team. My focus is getting the weights qualified. We’ll have to leave here and re-group a little bit but we have got to get back to work,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
