KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Bobby Telford (Iowa City, Iowa/Titan Mercury WC/Hawkeye WC) placed fifth at 125 kg/275 lbs., the only U.S. men’s freestyle wrestler competing at the respected Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix on Saturday.

Telford was defeated in a bronze-medal match by Baldan Tsyzhipov of Russia, 3-5.

He opened with a pair of wins over Russian athletes, Asadula Ibragimov, 5-4 in the first round and Shamil Khakieva, 3-1 in the second round. He was pinned in the semifinals by eventual champion Vladislav Baytsaev of Russia.

Telford, who starred for the University of Iowa and is in his first full season on the Senior circuit, was the second American to place fifth at the Yarygin this year. Andrew Howe (Norman, Okla./New York AC/Sooner WC) placed fifth at 74 kg/163 lbs. on Friday.

“Bob Telford showed some great progress competing at 125 kg today at the Yarygin. When he was fighting for ties and creating offensive action, he was very potent, also, crowding opponents and taking advantage of them moving away. In his first two matche,s he did a good job with these. Even in his losses, he saw things he can quickly improve upon and leave with some constructive learning. Finishing fifth at the Yarygin is a positive step,” said U.S. Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.

Four U.S. wrestlers have weighed in and received their draws for Sunday.

2012 Olympic champion Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) and 2015 World champion Kyle Snyder, (Woodbine, Md./Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC) both entered at 97 kg/213 lbs., but drew on opposite sides of the bracket and could only meet if they make the finals.

Varner opens against Yuriy Vlasko of Russia, the 2015 European Junior champion. Snyder drew another Russian, Georgi Dzukaev.

The U.S. also has a pair of entries at 65 kg/145.5 lbs., four-time World Team member Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC/Hawkeye WC) and past Junior World silver medalist Logan Stieber, Columbus, Ohio (Titan Mercury WC/Ohio RTC). Stieber was a four-time NCAA champion for Ohio State and Metcalf won a pair of NCAA titles for Iowa.

Metcalf opens against 2010 Youth Olympic Games champion Azamatbi Pshnatlov of Russia. Stieber draws Murad Nukhdadiev of Russia, who was third in the 2014 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix.

"Tomorrow, we have a big day with four experienced and great competitors stepping on the mats. We will be excited to get out there and let it fly,” said Zadick.
