16th annual Colorado Springs Metro Championships set for Doherty High School on Jan. 22-23

Over 25 Colorado Springs area high schools will take part in the 16th annual Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group 2015 Metro Wrestling Championships on January 22-23 at Doherty High School.
Pine Creek, which took home the team championship at the 2015 COS Metro Championships, will be in search of its seventh overall Metro title. Junior Jordan Martinez (120-5A) will be looking to defend his Metro championship title while senior Kace Nowlin (195-5A) will hope to improve on his second place finish from a year ago. Junior Peter Isais enters the tournament ranked third in the state at 160 and is looking for success in his new weight class after placing third at 145 last year at the Metro Championships.
The first session of the competition will begin on Friday, January 22 at 4:30 p.m. Saturday action begins at 9 a.m. with the Championship Finals scheduled at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening.
Admission for adults is $20 for all tournament passes. Student admission is priced at $5 for all tournament passes.
Local high schools anticipated to compete in the tournament are: Air Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado Springs Christian, Coronado, Discovery Canyon, Doherty, Falcon, Fountain Fort Carson, Harrison, James Irwin, Lewis Palmer, Liberty, Manitou Springs, Mesa Ridge, Mitchell, Palmer, Palmer Ridge, Peyton, Pine Creek, Rampart, Sand Creek, Sierra, The Classical Academy, Vista Ridge, Widefield and Woodland Park.
Six of the 15 Metro Champions from 2015 will be returning to the mat to defend their titles, including Martinez, who is ranked at No. 2 in the state, and senior Sam Turner from Discovery Canyon, ranked No. 1 in the state at 138 in 4A.
Other returning champions include No. 1 Samuel Freeman (145-4A) from Mesa Ridge, No. 2 Jason Hanenberg (120-5A) from Air Academy, No. 3 Zac Baker (160-4A) from Cheyenne Mountain, and No. 14 Chase McElhany (145-5A) from Coronado.
There are over 70 state ranked individual wrestlers in this year’s tournament and four state ranked teams including No. 2 Pine Creek (5A), No. 6 Discovery Canyon (4A), No. 7 Cheyenne Mountain (4A), and No. 8 Mesa Ridge (4A).
USA Wrestling will also be sponsoring a booth to promote the #GetYolked4Rio fundraising campaign. The #GetYolked4Rio mission is in full swing, with many people across the nation cracking eggs on their head in support of USA Wrestling’s quest for gold at the 2016 Olympics. Eggs will be available for a donation purchase with one egg costing $20 or three eggs for $50. Fans will be able to capture video of themselves getting yolked. Individual medals will be given to first through eighth place winners in each weight class. The top four teams will also receive team awards. An Outstanding Wrestler for lower and upper weight classes will be named, as well as an Outstanding Upperclassman and Outstanding Student Athlete of the Year (Senior). There will also be an award for Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, as well as Manager of the Year.
The event finals will be streamed live on USA Wrestling’s YouTube channel and TrackCast.
USA Wrestling organizes and conducts this tournament on an annual basis as a service to the Colorado Springs area wrestling community.
