Led by three champs, King three-peats as WCWA Women’s College National champions

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - King University won three of its four finals bouts and finished 18.5 points ahead of host Oklahoma City to win its third straight WCWA Women’s College National team title.
Champions for King were Marina Doi (101), Samantha Klingel (116) and Forrest Molinari (155). All three were first-time WCWA champion, and none of them were top seeded coming into the tournament. Head Coach Jason Moorman was named WCWA Coach of the Year.
Doi, a sophomore who was WCWA runner-up last year, scored three takedowns to defeat Sarah Allen of the Cumberlands, 6-0 in the finals. Doi lost earlier in the season to teammate Ashley Iliff, who Allen defeated in the semfinals. Doi is a past Cadet and Junior World medalist for the United States.
Klingel, a senior who missed last season with injury, scored a clutch takedown from a scramble in the second period to defeat Abby Lloyd of Simon Fraser, 3-0. She is a past University World Team member for Team USA.
Molinari, a junior, knocked off freshman top-seed Jessika Rottier of the Cumberlands, 7-0 in the finals. After jumping to a 4-0 lead in the first period, Molinari kept up the pressure in the second period to score the shutout. Molinari started her career at Missouri Baptist, and transferred to King. She was a member of the 2015 U.S. Junior World Team.
Team runner-up Oklahoma City had three champions of its own, junior Cody Pfau (101), freshman Becka Leathers (123) and junior Natalia Hinojo (130). All three were top seeds in their weight class.
It was a great night for Pfau, who defended her WCWA national title from last year. She scored a pin over Breonnah Neal of King in 4:35, avenging a loss to Neal earlier in the season. Pfau was elected for both of the major awards, winning the Outstanding Wrestler for the Year and the Outstanding Wrestler for the Tournament awards. Pfau made three U.S. Junior World Teams.
Leathers won her first national title as a freshman, defeating Megan Black of McKendree in the finals, 10-2. Leathers was a 2015 Junior World bronze medalist for the USA, and was also a member of Cadet World Teams.
Hinojo fired up the crowd when she used a gutwrench to pin Nicole Depa of Simon Fraser in just 21 seconds to claim her first WCWA title.
All four of the returning champions were able to repeat as champions, Pfau, plus sophomore Kayla Miracle of Campbellsville at 136, Victoria Francis of Lindenwood at 170 and junior Tiara Scott of Campbellsville at 191.
Miracle jumped to an 8-0 lead over Monica Ramirez of Lindenwood, then scored a pin in 3:45. For the second straight year, Miracle went up a weight class in order to help her team have a stronger lineup, and won the gold medal. She has won Junior and Cadet World medals for the United States.
Francis finished her senior year with her second straight national title, defeating Hanna Hall of Campbellsville, 11-4 in the finals. Francis is a past Junior World bronze medalist for the United States.
Scott scored a 10-0 technical fall in the finals over Payten Smith of Simon Fraser, 10-0. She scored a four-point double leg takedown and added three other two-point takedowns.
Simon Fraser placed third as a team with 170 points, and was led by 143-pound champion Mallory Velte, who scored a 10-0 technical fall over surprise finalist and No. 7 seed Maggie Douma. Velte missed last year’s college season with an injury, but returned in time to earn a spot on the U.S. Junior World Team last summer.
This was a #Road2IowaCity qualifying event, as the top three U.S. place winners in each weight class qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City, April 9-10. If an athlete was already qualified, that spot was not filled. A total of 21 new athletes were added to the Trials field today, and the list is posted below.
