Burroughs wins gold, Nelson gets silver at Yasar Dogu International in Turkey

Jordan Burroughs receives his gold medal at 74 kg at the Yasar Dogu International in Turkey
ISTANBUL, Turkey – 2012 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska RTC) started off the 2016 Olympic year with impressive dominance.
In his first competition since the 2015 World Championships, Burroughs won three of his four matches by technical fall to claim the gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the respected Yasar Dogu International.
In the championship finals, Burroughs dispatched Zelmkhan Khadziev of France, 14-3. Khadziev was fifth at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas.
His first two matches were 10-0 technical falls over Pedro Soto of Puerto Rico and Abdullah Arslan of Turkey. Burroughs semi-final was a notch closer as he won 5-0 over Soner Demirtas of Turkey.
Burroughs extends his record to an amazing 118-2 record on the Senior level, a career which started immediately after winning his second NCAA title for Nebraska in the 2011 season.
“Jordan Burroughs competed very well with three tech falls on the day. It was not without challenge however, as 2014 Junior World Champion of France, Zelimkhan Khadzhiev, started strong, scoring three points early. Jordan made great adjustments during the match and showed us why he is the champion he is, scoring the next fourteen points in a row,” said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick.
Adding a silver medal at 125 kg/275 lbs. was Tony Nelson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), who was a two-time NCAA champion for Minnesota. Nelson was defeated in the gold-medal finals by two-time World champion Taha Akguel of Turkey, 0-10.
Nelson had a dominant performance in his half bracket to reach the finals with three wins with bonus points. He opened with 10-0 technical falls over Recep Bolme of Turkey and Slim Trablsi of Turkey. In the semifinals, he pinned 2008 University World bronze medalis Yasin Kilic of Turkey in 1:38.
“Team USA wrestled some very excting matches and had strong performances on day two at the Yasar Dogu. Tony Nelson wrestled a very strong day making his way to the finals and gaining valuable experience against two-time World Champion Taha Akgul of Turkey,” said Zadick.
Falling in his bronze-medal match at 125 kg/275 lbs., was 2015 World Team member Zach Rey, (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC), who lost to 2015 World silver medalist and 2011 World bronze medalist Jamaladdin Magomedov of Azerbaijan, 1-3, to take fifth.
He beat Ruhullah Tasdemir of Turkey, 9-4 and Abdullah Omac of Turkey, 6-6, to reach the semifinals, where he lost to Akguel, 0-10.
“Day three we have a great group of five athletes taking the mats: At 65kg; James Green and Reece Humphrey; At 86kg, Deron Winn; and at 97kg, Olympic Champion Jake Varner and Scott Schiller. We will look to improve upon today’s performances,” said Zadick.
Varner will open against Magomedgadji Nurov of Macedonia, who was third in the 2015 Ali Aliev Tournament in Russia. Varner, a 2011 World bronze medalist to go with his 2012 Olympic gold, is fresh off a silver medal performance at the respected Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix in Russia.
Green will be competing for the first time since winning a 2015 World bronze medal up at 70 kg/154 lbs. This is his first time down to 65 kg since deciding to make his Olympic run there. He will face Sefa Askoy of Turkey in his first match.
Humphrey, a three-time U.S. World Team member, will battle 2010 Military World Games champion Agahahuseyin Mustafaev of Azerbaijan in his opener.
Competition will begin at 6 a.m. (EST) on Saturday with the medal matches starting at approximately 10 a.m. (EST). The Turkey Wrestling Federation is providing a live stream of the event that can be viewed at unitedworldwrestling.org.
