BUDAPEST, Hungary – The New York Athletic Club finished 11th at the Greco-Roman World Clubs Cup on Friday.

The New York Athletic Club, which is representing the United States in the tournament, closed out the tournament with two matches, beating a team from Kyrgyzstan after a loss to a club from Ukraine.

In the 11th place match, the New York AC tied the Berkut club of Kyrgyzstan, 4-4, but won the tiebreaker by outscoring the opponents in classification points, 19-18.

After dropping the first three matches, including a forfeit at 66 kg, the USA powered back with young Kamal Bey at 74 kg/163 lbs. Bey scored a 9-4 win over Ruslan Rakhmatulaev. Bey hit a four-point throw early in the second period to tie the bout at 4-4, then hit a counter double-overhook throw for four more points later in the period.

Veteran Cheney Haight won the next match at 80 kg/176 lbs., beating Bureo Beishalliev, 6-4. He scored all of his points in the first period. Haight scored two points on an arm throw, added two more by countering a throw for a takedown, then added a two-point gutwrench.

At 98 kg/215 lbs., G’Angelo Hancock had a pair of throws on the way to a pin over Uzur Dzhuzupbekov. His second throw came as he stopped a move by his opponent and threw him for the fall.

The USA closed out the dual with a forfeit at 130 kg, as Eric Fader’s opponent Murat Ramonov did not appear. These five classification points from Bey and Fader gave the USA the victory.

In the first round of the morning, the NYAC fell to the Samson Club of Ukraine, 7-1.

Scoring the lone U.S. win in the dual was Bey. He got his offense going, scoring a 12-4 technical fall over Butkhuzi Karaia. Included in the onslaught were a four-point hip toss and a four-point arm spin.

Losing a tough match at 71 kg/156 lbs. was Patrick Smith, who fell to Oleksii Kalinichenko, 6-4. Smith opened with a 3-0 lead, fueled by a two-point turn. Kalinchenko opened it up with a four-point headlock, followed by a two-point gut wrench, scoring all six points in one burst of action. Smith pressed the action in the second period and received a point for passivity, but Kalinchenko held on for the win.

“Our young guys, we are developing them the right way. This is preparation for 2020. We want to get these guys scoring points, going out there and attacking. We want to force the action. We want to be the guys who are scoring. When the guys are trying to score on us, we want to learn to counter attack. 11th place is a consolation award, to tell the truth. For us, we want to get our guys matches. There is nothing better than getting five matches in two days,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.

The NYAC went 1-2 on Thursday, with a win over Greece, and losses to Turkey and Hungary 2 to finish third in Group B. Only the top three in each pool were able to advance to Friday’s action.

Bey was the big star on Friday, winning both of his matches and putting points on the board all tournament. A member of the 2016 U.S. Junior World Team, Bey has shown the ability to beat Senior-level athletes even though he is only 18 years old.

“As everybody knows, I love to wrestle and score points. Yesterday, I wasn’t really throwing it. My stomach was hurting real bad, throwing up. I lost two matches. Today I felt much better, slept good, drank water, and I am back being me. With the new Greco rules, I just don’t care where he comes from, I don’t care about his record and background. I come from a good background myself. I just come out here to compete. It is great wrestling the best in the world,” said Bey.

Although he lost his first match on Friday, Hancock’s pin against Kyrgyzstan gave him a 3-1 record for the tournament. A Junior World bronze medalist last year, Hancock is looking to make an impact on the Senior level this year as well.

“The match before this last match was not so good, I went out there this time. I didn’t matter if I won or lost. I wanted him to remember me. It was a match where you have to give everything, which I did. Before the match, I was thinking, I’ll get a body lock and throw him. Ends up, I had a long, lanky guy, so let’s go with the body lock, 50/50, my favorite move anyway. It turned out in my favor,” said Hancock.

The tournament concludes at 4:00 p.m. Budapest time, with the third-place dual meet, followed by the championship dual meet between Turkey and Iran 1. The final scores will be updated in this story when the round is completed.
